I shuffle back, but realize I’m already at the wall.
“Is this their attempt to hide you away from us?” He continues looking at me with mismatched eyes and a scarred face. He looks nothing like Cash, Diesel, and Bishop, his facial proportions all wrong. It makes him look scary.
But he probably likes to be perceived that way.
My gut fills with dread. There’s only one thing worse than death. And it’s the thing that I’m ninety-nine percent sure is on his mind.
“Please!” I shake my head, tears forming in my eyes.
Reality hits me in the chest like I’ve been shot. There’s no getting away. This man is three times my size and I don’t know a thing about self-defense.
“Please.” I shake my head more erratically. “Don’t.”
“I hear through the grapevine that Venom Vultures members like to share their women, some even at the same time. I wonder if they’ll extend that invitation to us.”
Another figure strides in, this one just as big. “Let’s get her on the bed,” he says to his friend. “We can’t be long. I have a feeling Jax is gonna wanna end this before too much damage is done.”
“No!” I shake my head again, squeezing my legs to my chest.
The man’s long arm makes a reach for me. “Come out from under there, pretty.”
When I don’t move, the two men silently nod at one another, and then they make their move, positioning themselves on either side of me, one at the left and the other at the right. With the space in front of me clear, the door broken down, I can chance an escape.
I might as well. It’s all I have.
Sucking in my breath, I scramble as fast as I can out from under the bed.
But it’s too late.
One of their hands clasps around my ankle, dragging me back. I’m pulled backward, the red dress riding higher up my thighs.
“Look at you. A real beaut?—”
The man doesn’t finish the sentence, brought to silence by the cracking of bones. Laid on my stomach, I watch him fall before my eyes, neck dislocated, eyes glued open in death.
Scared, I begin to crawl backward, not wanting to meet the same fate.
But I back into something else. I spin around.
That’s when I meet Diesel’s eyes.
And they look furious.
He gives me a look of warning, placing his finger over his lips.
I try to slow my breathing, but it’s impossible when I see Diesel circle around the bed to grab the second Reaper Sons attacker by the head, placing his hands on either side of his face.
The gesture seems too kind, too gentle, for a man who looks like he wants to murder the entire world.
I back into the wall, breathless.
“Never lay a hand on her again. You understand?”
The petrified man nods his head just as Diesel presses his hands in opposite directions, issuing a crack. I gasp, cupping my hands over my mouth as the attacker’s neck dislocates.
Diesel pushes him away, and the man, now dead, slides down the wall, leaving a trail of blood. He lands in a seated position, his eyes forever peeled open in horror.
My hands start to tremble, pulse drumming in my chest as Diesel approaches me. “Stay under the bed. They’ll think you moved into a different room, too scared to share it with two corpses. Wait it out in here for a while longer. We’ll be back.”
