And perhaps still does…
“Besides,” continues Jax. His cold eyes extend to his daughter. “It’s not just father anymore, is it, sweetness? It’sgrandfather.”
It feels like the ground beneath my feet has opened up and now I’m free-falling, every organ in my body lurching.
“What?” Diesel says. I hear his knuckles crack. “What did you just say?”
“Did the military ruin your hearing? You heard me.” He gestures to Melissa. “It would appear that one of you has knocked up my daughter.”
I glance at Melissa and she shoots me awe’ll-talk-about-this-laterglare.
Butwillwe talk about this later?
Will we actually make it out of here?
“My dear Melissa.” Jax shakes his head, feigning disappointment. “I never wanted this for you.”
Melissa is looking at her father, but her vacant eyes suggest that she’s not actually seeing him. It’s like she’s stuck in a memory, hiding there instead because it’s safer.
“I didn’t want to believe it at first, but you have totally lost it,” Jax says. “He killed your mother.” He points to Diesel. “He shot herdead, but that didn’t stop you from opening your legs. You’re walking right into your own grave, my dear.”
Her eyes refocus. “What are you talking about?” Her eyes search the ground, pieces fitting together in her mind. Realization widens her eyes. “It wasn’t Gigi that planted the document. It wasyou.”
He claps slowly, each one reverberating around the cold basement walls. “Well done. Finally the penny has dropped.”
“And at the restaurant…you knew.”
Another laugh catches in his throat. “It was so obvious.”
“I don’t wanna hear another word of this,” Diesel says, boot meeting the first stair. “Let’s get out of here.”
“I don’t think Grizzly will be happy to hear that you disobeyed orders and rode out here to come and save your little plaything.” Jax tuts. “Remember what I told you. Melissa or the club. There is no winning.”
He turns to me, a cruel smile crawling onto his face. “Especially for you, Mr. Bishop.” A hand grips my wrist. I’ll give it to the guy, he’s stronger than he looks.
But nobody wins after a forceful kick in the balls.
He falls back, growling in pain.
But only for a short amount of time.
Diesel runs up the stairs, and I follow, guarding his back.
“You don’t want to do that,” Jax shouts. “Running away will cost you double, both the girlandyour club.”
I slip out my gun and fire, but the bastard ducks at just the right moment. The bullet continues sailing, instead firing straight into the monitor, shattering the screen.
“We need to get to Cash,” Diesel says, hurrying.
“What if he’s?—?”
“Don’t,” I say, cutting off Melissa’s question. I grab her hand, forcing her to look at me. “Sweetheart, are you really pregnant?”
Her silence says everything. She looks at me, terror still lacing her eyes, and squeezes my hand to confirm.
Fuck.
“Quick!” Diesel readjusts Melissa over his shoulder, breaking our hands apart.
