Chapter Thirty-Seven

CALEB

F uck! Did we just have our first fight?

I lean my forearms against the kitchen counter and place my head in my hands. What the fuck just happened? I only want to look after her, why’s that so wrong? I know Lauren’s independent and I know she wants to do it by herself but if I have the means to help her… why can’t she accept it?

The inner voice of reason decides to pipe up, Would you accept it? Fuck no I wouldn’t, but this isn’t about me, it’s about her. Surely, she can see what I mean, right?

I look over at the clock and see it’s 3 a.m., so I drag my ass up to bed—I’m not as young as I used to be, and these late nights are playing havoc with me.

I open the door to my bedroom and pause.

Where’s Lauren ? I glance around and see that the bedroom and bathroom are empty.

I quietly walk down the hall to the spare room and push the door open gently, where I see Lauren curled up on her side under the duvet, fast asleep.

I pad over to her quietly, careful not to disturb her and crouch down by the side of the bed, watching as her chest rises and falls gently as she sleeps, her pale eyelashes resting on her cheeks. I gently tuck a stray hair behind her ear and kiss her forehead.

Getting undressed, I climb in behind her, wrapping my arm around her waist and pulling her into me so her back is flush with my front. Lauren can be as mad at me as she wants but she sleeps in my bed with me.

As I lie in the dark, I replay our conversation in my head, wondering where I went wrong and why she’s so upset with me. I eventually fall asleep, still none the wiser.
