Page 51 of My Destiny
“That’s sweet of you.”
“I got to watch you dance through that,” he says, flicking his thumb towards the mirror. “You were amazing.”
“Thank you.” I fight a smile as I bow my head. Jake hated being dragged along anything related to dancing. He wasn’t a fan of that part of my life. “I’ll just pack up, and then I’ll be ready to leave.”
He extends his hand to me. “Will you dance with me first?”
“But there’s no music playing.”
“We don’t need it.” Before I get a chance to respond, he pulls my body towards his. “Please?”
I’m finding out pretty fast that I’m powerless when it comes to this man. He slides one of his arms around my waist, entwining our fingers together with his other hand. My body melts into his as he takes the lead. I hear him softly humming as he sweeps me away. In this moment it feels like we’re the only two people in the world.
“Dancing isn’t something I normally do, but for some reason I want to do it with you.” He sighs like he can’t believe his own words. “I want to experience it all with you, Brooke.” I bow my head instead of replying. I want to experience so much with him as well, but I can’t bring myself to say it. I’m still fighting these feelings I have for him.
He gently places a finger under my chin, raising my eyes back to his. “I can understand your reluctance to jump into another relationship,” he says. “It’s been years since I’ve been in one. It seems like a lifetime ago now, but there’s no denying what my ex did changed me. When it comes to matters of the heart, I’ve become completely guarded.” I give him a sympathetic smile, because I understand those words completely. “I feel it’s only fair to warn you though, I’m losing the battle this time around.”
He continues to hold me close as he stills. The pull between us is just too strong. My eyes flutter shut the moment his face inches towards mine. He’s my kryptonite.
I pick up my phone when it dings.
Just picking up Chinese now, I’ll be home soon. x
When Chris dropped me off after my dance class, Logan walked me in, escorting me safely to his apartment before heading back to work.
I type my reply.
See you soon.
I want to add a kiss, but decide not to. I’m still in two minds about us, but I’m trying to be more open minded. My talk with Jill yesterday was insightful. One thing she said rang true. ‘You can’t judge many by the actions of a few.’ It brought my behaviour towards Logan into perspective. My judgement of him has been unfair. My track record with lawyers has been less than stellar, but that doesn’t mean they’ll all screw me over. I have to try and remain focused on that.
Placing my phone down on the breakfast bar, I go upstairs to freshen up. After running a brush through my hair, I pull it back into a ponytail. Rummaging through my toiletry bag, I grab my toothbrush before lining it with paste. I usually wait until I’m ready for bed before brushing my teeth, but I’m secretly hoping to get another one of those kisses he gave me at the studio. They’re addictive.
I can’t seem to settle as I pace back and forth, waiting for him to return. But the moment I hear the lift ding, I quickly seat myself on his white leather sofa and try my best to look inconspicuous.
When the doors open, I see him juggling two large brown paper bags, as well as his briefcase. “Let me help you with those.”
He stills as I rush towards him, and he has that smouldering look on his face again, as his eyes travel the length of my body. I see a smile tug at his lips when he gets to my bare legs. I showered and changed into a pair of cut off denim shorts and a red singlet when I got home. It was a little chilly out today, but Logan’s ducted air conditioning makes his penthouse warm and cozy.
I take the bags out of his hands, and he follows me into the kitchen. “Babe, your arse in those shorts!” Reaching out, he grabs a handful, giving it a gentle squeeze. “And don’t even get me started on those legs, they go on for days.” The moment I place the Chinese food on the counter, he spins me around, pulling me into his arms. “I’ve been dying to do this all afternoon,” he says, crashing his lips into mine. If I’m honest, I’ve been dying for him to do that too. My eyes meet his when our mouths finally part. “Mmm, minty.” I smile, grateful I brushed my teeth. He gently cups my face in his hands. “It’s so nice coming home to you.”
I have no reply for that. Well, not one he’d like. I’ve enjoyed my time here with him, but things are moving way too fast. Even if a relationship does blossom between us, I’m only here until Jake is found.
When he lets me go, I busy myself unpacking the food while he puts his briefcase in his office.
“Geez, how much did you get?” I ask when he re-enters the kitchen. It looks like he ordered the entire menu.
“I didn’t know what you liked, so I got a bit of everything. You do like Chinese food, right?”
“Love it.”
Leaning forward, he plants a soft kiss on my nose. “Good. I’ll set the table.”
“Do you want me to empty these onto plates?” I ask.
“No, just leave them in the containers.” He opens a few drawers. “I’m sure Jill has a table runner here somewhere.” I inwardly smile. I’m surprised he even knows what a table runner is.
“Wine?” he asks, once we’re seated.
