Page 47 of My Destiny
“Morning, Jill.”
“Can I get you some breakfast, a coffee maybe?” I’m more than capable of making my own, but Logan’s coffee machine looks way too complicated for me to even attempt it.
“Coffee sounds perfect. I don’t have the stomach for food right now.”
“That’s understandable, dear,” she says, placing her hand on my arm. “Logan told me what happened this morning.”
“Oh my god, he told you we had sex?” I screech, as my eyes widen.
“My goodness, no,” she says, averting her gaze.
I wish for the ground to open up and swallow me whole when I see her cheeks turning pink.
“He told me that your place had been vandalised.”
“Oh.” I let out a sigh as the realisation hits home. My mind has been so preoccupied with a certain hot lawyer, I hadn’t given my current situation much thought.
“Don’t be upset with him. He only told me so I could keep an eye on you. Mr. Cavanagh is very fond of you, but I guess you already know that since…” She waves her hand around in the air instead of finishing her sentence.
I know she’s referring to the fact that we’ve had sex. To say I’m mortified she now knows about that, is an understatement.
“He’s a good man, but I guess you already know that too.”
“Yes,” I say, smiling. What I’ve seen of him so far is pretty much perfect, and there lies the problem. What is the other side of him like? I had no clue about the monster inside Jake until it reared its ugly head. Does Logan have a monster inside him also?
“He deserves to find happiness. His life pretty much revolves around his work, I’m afraid.”
“You’re very fond of him, aren’t you?”
“Although he already has a beautiful mother, he’s like a son to me.”
“That’s sweet,” I say, taking a seat at the breakfast bar. “He’s lucky to have you both.”
She slides the coffee across the bench, and I stare down into it as my finger circles the edge of the mug. “You seem preoccupied today, dear.”
I shrug. “I’ve got a lot on my mind.”
She reaches out, placing her hand on top of mine. “Well, I’m a good listener if you ever need someone to talk to.”
Looking up at her, I smile. “Thank you.”
I may need to take her up on that offer. I have nobody else to confide in.
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Logan
I check my phone for the umpteenth time since sliding into the back of the limousine. There’s still no reply from Brooke, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t worry me. My entire being wants to call her, but I need to give her space. She let some of her walls down this morning, so putting pressure on her now is the worst thing I can do.
My disappointment grows when I arrive home and find Brooke’s not there to greet me. It’s the first time I can remember looking forward to coming home. It’s basically where I eat and sleep, but with her here, things feel different.
“You’re home already, Mr. Cavanagh,” Jill says, as she walks into the kitchen. I’m rarely home this early, so she’s usually gone by the time I get home. But today I really wanted to be here.
“Where’s Brooke?” I ask, grabbing a bottle of water out of the fridge.
“In her room. She’s been there most of the day.”
“Oh.”
