Page 35 of My Destiny
Brooke
My head is spinning as we leave the police station. Logan barely spoke a word the entire time, which concerns me. Is he upset with me? I know he said I wasn’t in this alone, but I’m okay if he’s changed his mind. After all, this is my problem, not his.
The moment we step into the night air, he stops and turns to face me. I can see the anguish on his face as he eyes me. Is this where he sends me on my way? I wouldn’t hold it against him if he did.
I open my mouth to speak, but before the words are even out of my mouth, I’m bundled in his arms. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t more insistent about taking you home from the hospital that day.”
“What?” I say, looking up at him confused. “Is that why you were pacing back and forth like a caged animal in the interview room?”
“As soon as you mentioned what he’d done to you that day, I felt like I was going to burst an artery.”
“Why?” I ask. “None of that was your fault.”
His hands move to my shoulders as he draws back to make eye contact with me. “Don’t you see? I could’ve stopped it from happening.”
“How? If I’d pulled up outside with you, knowing what I know now, I think it would’ve made the situation worse.”
He wraps me in his arms again, holding me tight. “I feel like I let you down.”
“Never. You saved my life, remember?”
He doesn’t let go for the longest time. I’m not going to lie—it feels good in his arms. It’s been so long since I’ve been held like this. I inhale through my nose; I could drown in his scent.
“Did you just sniff me?” he asks.
“What? No!”
“I think you did.”
“Well, you’re delusional if you think that.”
When I hear a chuckle from beside us, my eyes move to his chauffeur. He’s looking up at the stars as he patiently holds the door open for us, but there’s no mistaking the grin on his face.
Pulling back, Logan reluctantly lets me go. I smile at him as he steps aside, allowing me to climb into the car first. “Thank you,” I say to his driver as I pass.
“You’re welcome, ma’am,” he replies with a nod.
“Not a word,” I hear Logan mumble as he passes him and seats himself beside me.
“Yes, Mr. Cavanagh,” he replies with amusement in his voice. “The penthouse?”
“Please.”
“Maybe it’s best if I just go home,” I say. I’m not entirely comfortable going to his place, and this may give him the out he needs. I don’t want him feeling like he has to help me; I’m more than capable of taking care of myself.
“Not a chance in hell.” His eyes dart to me. “I’m not letting you go back there until we have some answers.”
“I probably should just stay at a hotel for the night, then.”
“No, you’ll be safer with me.”
“What if I don’t want to stay with you?” I ask, a tad annoyed at his insistence.
“I’m not going to bite you, Brooke.”
“Maybe I’m into biting,” I retort. I’m not impressed with his forcefulness, despite his good intentions.
“Well, if that’s the case, I could possibly accommodate.”
