Page 76 of It's Not PMS, It's You
Another snort from behind.
Why had I said that?
I couldn’t think straight with Nick close by.
Edward took a sip of his tea. “I’m curious—what’s the hardest part of your job?”
I thought about it for a moment. “Oh, I don’t know. Probably having to rely on other people to get things done. Most of the time it’s just easier to do it myself.”
“I know exactly what you mean. Too bad we couldn’t clone ourselves. Wouldn’t that make life much easier?”
I smiled, completely agreeing with him. “It certainly would. Until that day, I will continue to work fourteen to seventeen-hour days.”
“Your dedication is amazing. You’re a take-charge kind of woman.”
“Thank you.”
“Where did you get your education?”
“USD and UCLA.”
“I’m impressed, you’ve got brainsandbeauty. You’re a real powerhouse.”
“Well, I don’t know about that, but I’ve got big goals and I’m working my butt off to achieve them.”
“Determination is good. You’re an eager beaver.”
Another snort from behind.
Ignore Nick. He can’t handle that Edward can see all my positive attributes and that he appreciates them.
Edward downed the rest of his tea and poured himself another cup from the pot on the table. “Would you like more?”
Kind and considerate. Appreciates what I’m doing.
“Not at the moment, thank you.” I pointed to my tea cup. “I drink pretty slowly.”
Another snort from behind. “Unless it’s wine.”
Edward glanced over my shoulder. “Did that man behind you just say something?”
I shook my head. “I didn’t hear anything.”
I was close to swinging around in my seat and strangling Nick.
Edward drank his tea in one gulp and poured himself another cup.
How was he not burning his mouth?
I could still see the steam coming off the tea as he drank it.
“Oops.” Edward stood all of a sudden. “Looks like I need to return to the bathroom for an encore. Be right back in a jiffy.” He took off his blazer and hung it on the back of his chair.
“Oh . . . okay.” I watched him walk toward the bathroom, expecting Nick to say something snarky, but I was wrong.
Nick didn’t come over and didn’t say a word.
Good. Let’s hope it stays that way.
