Page 7 of Infatuated as They Come (Sinful Trilogy #2)

That dumb fight with my dad was something I desperately wanted to forget. His cruel words lingered in my head and I hated that I couldn’t fight them off. I didn’t need a ring. I didn’t need a thing from Sawyer except for what he already gave me.

I was beyond thankful when Sawyer surprised me in the morning with a cooler in his truck stocked with food and drinks.

He didn’t tell me where we were going and I was okay with that as I rested my head on his shoulder and he kept his hand on my thigh, the low hum of the engine in the air as he drove.

“I was gonna take you to The Ritz, but I thought this would be better,” he drawled.

Smiling softly, I kept my eyes shut. “This is much, much better than The Ritz.”

“The view’s a lot better here, anyway,” he said, tracing a finger along one of my cheeks.

I could feel his eyes on me even though mine were closed, my face burning as he touched me. “Are you gonna miss Texas? We’ll be gone soon…”

“Not really,” he said bluntly.

Laughing, I shifted so that I was sitting on my heels, taking in the too beautiful scenery. Around us was a sea of red, yellow and blue wildflowers, and the cloudless sky above us just seemed to go on endlessly.

“Sounds like you’re ready to say goodbye,” I said, shuffling in closer to him. “Thanks for bringing me here. You picked a really gorgeous spot. ”

“You like it here?” he asked, his fingers moving through my hair. “You’re having fun?”

“Yup. A lot.” Throwing my arms around his shoulders, I felt his hand on the small of my back, pulling me in closer.

Our eyes locked together, his all deep and green and gorgeous and our lips oh so close.

I was just about to close that tiny gap between us when I spotted something behind him amongst the flowers. “Ooh, bluebells!”

“You can’t tease a guy like that,” Sawyer said lowly.

Standing up, I patted down my dress and quickly moved to the never-ending collection of flowers.

Mixed within that beautiful spread of yellow, blue and red was the distinct color of vibrant purple.

There were just a few, the stalks a healthy green and the petals a pretty violet, making it stand out amongst all the other flowers.

“So pretty,” I said, letting my fingers gently dance along the petals, being careful not to do any damage. “I love Texas bluebells.”

“Yeah, I guess they’re nice.” Sawyer reached around me, lifting them right out of the ground with one swift, easy tug.

“Sawyer!”

“What? You’re supposed to pick ‘em. More will grow back.”

“We’ll get yelled at.”

He snorted. “By who?”

“I don’t know. Someone. The flower police.”

“I’ll yell at ‘em back for you,” he said casually, plucking one of the bluebells from the bouquet in his hand. Reaching forward, he gently pushed a few strands behind my ear before he layered the flower right on top, tucking it in. “There. Matches your little dress.”

“How does it look?” I tossed my hair over my shoulder, the soft feeling of the petal brushing against my ear.

“Looks perfect,” he drawled, his eyes stuck on the flower before they finally met mine. “You always look perfect.”

I hummed happily when his lips pressed to my mouth, my eyes fluttering shut as he kissed me softly and slowly.

The gentle sound of the hot wind was in the air and my heart was thumping in my chest as Sawyer pushed his tongue between my lips, his strong arms looping around me.

As fun as my party had been, and as much as I enjoyed seeing everyone, there was still nothing better than the quiet, easy days with Sawyer.

Those were my favorite. He always gave me the kind of days I wanted to remember and be in and feel forever.

“I guess I’m gonna miss Texas a little,” he said when he pulled away from me, hands still on my waist. “I mean, all that stuff we did over the summer. I’ll miss that. There’s something special about doing them here at home. Guess that doesn’t make sense…”

“No, it does. I get it.”

“I guess, um… What I’m tryna say is that I don’t have a lot of good memories from living here,” he said lowly, eyes moving to the grass below us for a short moment.

“It’s nice to finally have some good ones.

Ones I wanna remember forever. I like driving past all the places we went to.

They always make me think of you and all the good things we did.

I’ve never felt that before. I used to drive past places and things and not think a single thing, but now when I do that, I see your face in my head.

I think of how good you make everything.

I don’t know how you do that, but I like how everything makes me think of you these days.

So, I have that now. I have special memories and moments and things I always wanna remember about this place.

You’re kind of the center of everything for me now… ”

Heart full and soaring all at once, I kept my hands wrapped around his shoulders.

“I’ll miss all those things too, but that’s okay, right?

They’ll be here when we come back, and we’ll still have those memories no matter where we go.

I’ll miss all of that in New York, but it’s a chance to make good memories there too.

Different ones. And the best part is that we won’t get sunburnt while doing so. ”

“I don’t mind getting sunburnt if it means I get to spend time with you.”

My hands landed on his arms and I felt the distinct feeling of too warm skin. “Oh my gosh, we should go in the shade. You’re gonna get all red before the day is out.”

“Worth it,” he muttered, pulling me back into a gentle kiss.

We stayed like that for a little while longer, just kissing amongst the flowers before we lay back down with my head on his lap once more. Then the late afternoon heat started to truly kick in, and it seemed like a good time to head on back to Dallas.

We hopped back into Sawyer’s truck and got started on the journey back home.

The drive would take us a good while, and part of me wished that the roads would magically become longer so we’d get to have more time together.

I could hear the engine turning on and my eyes shut at the noise, and then there was Sawyer’s hand on my thigh, his thumb rubbing at my skin in the slowest, softest of circles.

Just this. This was enough. This was all I could ever need.
