“Time to sleep.”
My eyes closed. The last thing I remembered before falling asleep was a light caress on my cheek.
Chapter Eight
Mason
“Give it to me straight, Hawk,” Scarlett said over the phone. “You think we can really trust these guys? Storm seems to approve. He and that Alastair guy really hit it off from what I hear. But I want your honest-to-god opinion.”
“We have to trust them. I don’t think we have much of a choice at this point.” I glanced at the closed motel room door before sitting on the curb in front of it. Gray had been asleep for about thirty minutes. “This war is a fight for humanity.”
“Okay. So what’s the plan?”
“You’re asking a newb like me?”
“Fuck you, Hawk. But yeah. You’re the one who came to us about this. You call the shots. Storm, Grim, and I have your back.”
“The plan is to keep hunting,” I told her. “The monster attacks lately are because of the son of Lucifer. He’s targeting humans to kick off his war. Alastair transferred money into all of your accounts. Use it to get better weapons. Preferably ones with silver. Those can take down some of the upper-level demons.”
“How the hell did he manage to hack into all our shit?” she asked.
“One of his brothers is good with computers. The one who lives in Russia. I think his name’s Daman.”
“These guys are really something, huh? Okay. Well, keep us updated.”
“Will do.”
The call disconnected, and I pocketed my phone. The sunny March afternoon was a nice reprieve from the cloudy, cold weather. How long it would last was anyone’s guess. Best thing to do was enjoy it while I could. Kind of like my situation with Gray. Nothing solid could come from our relationship, but it would be fun while it lasted.
My body stirred at the reminder of fucking him in the shower.
Damn. Maybe it was because it had been a while since I last fucked, but I had never nutted so hard than I had with Gray. The mind-numbing orgasm had consumed me, inside and out, and I’d nearly collapsed on him afterward. I still felt shaken by it, like it had changed something inside of me, shifted things around.
“Mason?” a small voice croaked from behind me. Gray stood in the doorway rubbing at his eyes, the blanket around his shoulders engulfing his slender frame. “I’m hungry.”
He really was like a little angel. Too fucking precious to be real.
I stood from the curb and approached him, pulling him into my arms once I was close enough. He smelled like my shampoo, yet his warm vanilla scent lingered beneath it as I pressed my face into his blond curls.
“I like when you hold me like this.” Gray nuzzled my chest. “But if I don’t get food, I’m gonna eat you instead.” He lightly bit at my shirt.
Unable to hold it back, I laughed. Gray beamed up at me, his brown eyes so fucking big. Innocent. Because despite him being thousands of years old, innocent was the first word that came to mind when he smiled at me like that.
“Let me guess.” I brushed the bangs from his eyes. “You want waffles?”
“You’re a fast learner, Sir Hawk.”
I released another low laugh. Dammit. What was Gray doing to me? I felt lighter when he was with me, like the weight of my past—of my mistakes—was a bit easier to carry. And I’d never smiled so much as I had in the past few days. When I was around him, it felt like I’d known him all my life.
Must be the orgasm talking.
After Gray got dressed, I tossed my duffel bag in my truck and started the engine. He climbed into the passenger seat, wearing a familiar pair of sunglasses.
“Thief.”
“They look good on me,” he said with a grin. He must’ve swiped them from my bag when I wasn’t looking.
“Can’t argue with that.” I backed out of the parking spot, fully aware of his attention on me as I drove toward the Sunnyside café.
