Page 88 of Definitely Not a Thing
The wobble in her voice was the only reason I didn’t push it.
I let her change the subject.
Let her end the call.
While I was in the parking lot of our building.
I waffled a bit over how she would take me popping up on her like this – I’d definitely let her believe I was referring to my place in Blackwood when I told her I parked. It could be read as deception, which wouldn’t mix well with the hesitance she’d already been feeling about… everything.
I turned the car back on, ready to take my ass back where I was supposed to be.
Then I thought about her voice cracking.
Don’t make me cry again.
Damn crybaby.
I shook my head, and turned the car back off.
Went to her door.
And the look on her face when she opened it – her swollen, glossy eyes, the way she flung herself into my arms…
Yeah.
Definitely the right decision.

I wasn’t lettinganything get me down today.
I decided it as soon as I opened my eyes – I was just going to roll with whatever little thing might go wrong.
Starting with the cold water in the faucet not turning on.
Like, that side literally would not give me any water, which baffled even the quick internet search I did, thinking it might be a simple fix.
Fine.
Brushing my teeth in hot water was a departure from my norm, but my teeth were still clean after, so no big deal.
The water refusing to get hot for my shower though…thatwas a pain.
But not the end of the world.
Mystery stain on the jeans I’d planned to put on – no biggie.
Snagging a hole in my favorite sweater with my fingernail, and ripping the nail too deep into my goddamn nail bed with it…
I had to sit down for a second after that, to collect myself.
But… a bandaid from the first aid kit in the bathroom, and a quick search for a skilled seamstress on Proxy made everything a little brighter.
I was ready to head to Urban Grind and start my day.
“Good morning Mama,” I greeted as I breezed up to her in the kitchen to kiss her cheek…wait a damn minute.“Mama?!” I squealed, wrapping arms around her to squeeze. “What are you doing here?!”
