“Is that so?” She looked at my father.
“How dark the world would be without the two of them.” He approached and slid an arm around her waist. Love shone in his green eyes. “The darkness is such a lonely place to be. Fortunate that I have a little flame to make my days brighter.” He patted the top of my head, then nuzzled my mother’s temple. “And a moon to guide me home.”
The memory faded.
That’s when I noticed a wet streak on my cheek. I wiped at it and cleared my throat, my sternum aching. To the world, my father had been a villain, someone who’d slain innocent people. But to me? He’d been my hero.
How very thin the line was between the two.
Chapter Four
Kyo
“If you keep showing up here, I’ll have no choice but to think you’re stalking me.”
I glanced over at Castor and tried to ignore how hot he looked that night in a fitted black tee and jeans that hugged his ass just right. “You wish.”
“Hey, this is my domain.” He motioned to the club.
Rolling my eyes, I tipped my beer back and finished it off. “I don’t see you paying rent on the place.”
Castor’s eyes crinkled at the edges, and he grazed his teeth over his bottom lip. Heat radiated from him, and that heat burned hotter when he moved closer to my barstool, placing an arm next to me on the counter and the other on the back of my seat.
“You want your usual, Cas?” the bartender asked.
“Nah. I have something better in mind,” Castor answered without taking his eyes off me.
My cock twitched at that, and I averted my gaze to my now empty beer. Like the other night when I came to the club, everything about the Nephilim called to me, but I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of giving in too easily. Even though Imost definitelywanted to fuck his brains out.
“Shouldn’t you be off fucking a cat boy or something?” I asked, side-eyeing him.
“Shouldn’t you be flirting with a reaper?”
“Reaper?” I blinked, confused. Then I remembered. “Oh. That guy. He was hot.”
Castor narrowed his eyes. “I’m hotter.”
I couldn’t help but laugh. “Wow. You’re jealous.”
Truth be told, I was a bit jealous too. When I’d smelled that cat shifter on him the last time we’d talked, it had gotten under my skin a little. Itshouldn’thave though. Castor was little more than a stranger to me. But it had caused me to flirt with a random guy and fuck him in the corner of the club. The sex had been underwhelming and sadly forgettable.
Because the reaper wasn’t who I’d wanted.
“Damn right I was jealous,” Castor said, leaning in closer. “I have no shame in admitting it. I want you to myself.”
“Do you flirt this heavily with everyone you meet?”
“Only the pretty boys like you.”
“What makes you think I’m interested?” I slid off the barstool and faced him.
His smirk held strong. “Aren’t you?”
“What if I say no?”
Castor brushed the backs of his knuckles down my bicep. “Then I’d back off.”
His emerald eyes gleamed beneath the neon lights flashing above us, and the smell of sex perforated the air as people around us lost themselves to pleasure.
