Henry

F orty-five minutes. That's how long we've been home. It feels nothing like a home without Nina here. Without knowing if she'll ever come home.

Kai steps in front of me, a blurry scowl etched into his features. "Stop that." I'm not sure what he sees, but I don't do anything else except stare at him. "Henry, please stop."

It's my fiancé's worried tone that finally snaps me out of the depressing trance I was in. "What?"

"You're thinking worst-case scenario," he replies and uncurls from his kneeling position. I take his hand when he offers to hoist me up from our front step, because what else am I supposed to do?

I'd love to bury my head in the sand and pray for this to be a horrible nightmare, but it's not. Nina's gone and something feels strange. Like she's not really gone.

That could be a morbid thought. I don't mean she's not gone as in not dead . I mean, she doesn't feel far. But what in the hell could that possibly mean?

"That's better."

Once again, Kai pulls me from my thoughts. This time I wasn't staring at the ground, I was eyeing the neighborhood. "What's better?" I ask Kai, confused.

Kai's attention races between my eyes like he's studying me. "You're thinking logically again." I snort and he gives me a pained grin with the response, "Logical for your different self."

Weird...he means weird. Fuck, that boosts my confidence because if he needs some Henry logic, then I'll give it. "She's close. I swear she isn't cities away like that asshole was saying." I nod at the beer bellied sheriff. Fucker's just lazy.

"What else?" Kai shifts and stands shoulder to shoulder with me, eyeing up the crowd of neighbors, detectives, and officers.

I study each and every face I can see. "I don't know." Admitting that feels like swallowing needles, but it's the truth. "We're missing something."

Trevor stomps through the yard and crosses his arms while glaring at the woods which have been taped off. Kai follows my gaze, and something about his body language makes me focus on him instead.

Each time Kai looks from Trevor, to the crowd of onlookers, and back to Trev, my heart thumps an extra beat. "Kai...What are we missing?"

He tenses; his spine shoots ramrod straight. " Someone. We're missing SOMEONE! RIDGE, WITH ME!" Kai takes off in a sprint for the neighbor’s house.

I'm confused, but I bolt after them, trusting my man. I really fucking hope he leads me to our woman. Our life. Our fucking heart .
