Chapter Thirty-Three
Logan rolled over. Where was AJ? He had a faint memory of her kissing him.
He woke up fully.
No! She’d left. He needed to see her before work. He wasn’t mad at her for going. He wanted her to know that. Plus he had an uneasy feeling he couldn’t account for. She needed to understand how he felt.
He dressed in record time, grabbed the keys to his motorcycle, and took off down the road, praying he could catch up with her by the time she got to work. He wanted to steal a few moments with her before she clocked in.
AJ groaned. Where was her cell phone? She needed to call Logan.
She dug it out of her bag, but a car drove up behind her and stopped.
Panic flashed through her. What if it was her stalker? Had he done something to her car?
She fumbled with her phone and dropped it. Not the time to be a klutz, AJ .
Reaching to the floor, she picked up the phone then checked her side-view mirror.
Relief washed over her. It was just Miles.
After popping the hood, she opened the door and got out, phone in hand.
“Hey, AJ!”
“Miles.”
“Is everything okay?”
“My car died. Do you know cars?”
“Not really, but I can give you a ride to town.”
“No, I can call Logan. Do you mind hanging out with me until he gets here? We’ve had some …” She probably shouldn’t say too much about her stalker; it felt weird to talk about it. “I guess you could say we’ve had some bad luck lately, and I’d rather not be alone while I wait for him.”
She lifted her phone to dial Logan, but Miles’s hand covered her phone and hand.
“You don’t need to do that. I’ll take care of you. Are you headed to work? I wouldn’t want you to be late. Let me give you a ride, then you can call a tow truck from there. It’ll be fine.”
“I appreciate your desire to help, but I just need to call Logan.”
She stepped back.
Miles made an equal step. “Let me.”
Another step back, once again matched by Miles,
“Give you.” He pressed her up against her car. “A ride.”
“No.” Her heart sputtered before taking off at full speed. Why was Miles acting like this? “I won’t ride in a car with another man. Logan and I have that agreement. Please back off and let me call my husband.”
“I don’t think you understand what’s going on here, dear.” Miles drew a knife from his pocket with his left hand.
She gasped. Her phone clattered to the ground.
He pointed the knife at her throat, then ran it down her sternum until it was aimed at her gut. With his other hand he reached up and touched the side of her face. “I’ve tried to woo you, but you’ve been so rude. Play time is over. You will be mine.”
AJ trembled. God help me.
