***Ethan***
I’m not going to get into this with her right now. She’s not
in the right frame of mind, and frankly, neither am I. I just need to be here
for her. The rest will come after.
“When did you find out you were pregnant?”
“A couple weeks ago.” She glances at me, the guilt evident in
her eyes before her gaze drops, concealing it. “I didn’t know what you would
think. I was trying to figure out what to do.”
“Obviously, you decided to keep them. When were you planning
on telling me?”
“Like I said, I was trying to figure it out.”
“You know I wouldn’t have let you do it alone, right?”
I was going to marry you anyway.
“I know.” As I stroke her tear-streaked cheek, I think about
what could have been. “I was on the pill, you know. I didn’t—”
“I know.” I stop her before she gets it out.
It’s not like I took any precautions; I already knew she was
my mate and mother of my children. Besides, protection has never been an issue
for me. Wolves are immune to human diseases, so I hadn’t even thought about it.
As for babies, well… I was very careful before her.
“Twins… I bet they would have been beautiful like you.”
Oh, dear God. I should just shut up. She starts to breathe
heavily and tears gather in her eyes again. When her lip begins to tremble, I
pull her into my arms and hold her tightly.
“I’m sorry,” I apologize. “I’m sorry.”
She raises her face to mine, bewilderment in her eyes. “Am I
being punished? It’s not fair!”
“You’ve done nothing to be punished for.”
She buries her face in my chest, sobs rocking her entire
body. If anyone deserves punishment, it’s me. Punish me, God. This
whole situation is my fault. Just show me how to take her pain away. I hold
her because it’s the only thing I can do.
“I want my daddy!”
“I know… but I’m here, sweetheart.”
“No!” She pushes at my chest until I release her. “I don’t
want you here. Just leave me alone!”
“Casey—”
“Just go!” she screams. “And don’t come back!”
“Fine. I’ll go.” At the door, I turn to face her. “I’ll go,
but I’m not going far. I’ll be back, Casey.”
I walk back into the waiting room and see that Clara, Sam,
and Brad have joined Brick and Charlie. They all stand as I approach. Clara
rushes forward and throws her arms around me.
“Oh, Ethan! How is she?”
“Right now? Angry. But physically, the doctor says she’ll be
fine.”
“Thank God! Can I see her?”
“Sure. Maybe you can calm her down.”
Clara picks up her thermos, no doubt containing one of her
famous teas, and heads to Casey’s room. I look over at my men, and they all
seem distraught. I now realize that this affects them also. I know Charlie and
Brick adore her, but the others have grown fond of her, too. They have
been following her around for weeks. They risked their lives for her. If they
weren’t there last night, I would have certainly lost her. I walk toward them,
hand outstretched. Sam takes it first, and I pull him into a one-armed hug. I
do the same with Brad, and he pats my back.
“Thank you… for everything you did last night, everything
you’ve done these last few weeks.”
“It’s no problem. We only did what we would have done for
you.”
At Brad’s words, the other three men nod and I see something
in their eyes—acceptance. They’ve accepted her, not just as my mate, but as
their alpha.
