Page 33 of Beneath the Blue Moon

***Casey***

I’m running through a field of flowers. Why? I have no idea.

Maybe I’m imagining myself in a scene from a movie. Whatever the reason, I’m

happy. I’m running and laughing like an idiot. A huge brown wolf appears

alongside me, and instead of being scared and running in the opposite

direction, I stop. Crouching next to him, I throw my arms around his neck. I

fall back, and he lands on top of me, licking my face. And I’m still laughing.

I gaze into his eyes and feel nothing but love for the gigantic animal. He

stares back at me with beautiful yellow eyes, and I know he feels the same.

I smile as I open my eyes, slowly drifting out of sleep.

Then, I remember why I’m smiling. What the hell? What kind of dream was

that? My back is as stiff as a board, and I realize it’s because I fell

asleep on the ground. Wait… What’s that heavy breathing? I sit up and

slowly turn around. My eyes widen in fear, and I place my hand over my mouth to

stop myself from screaming. No wonder I was dreaming about wolves—lying next to

me, seemingly asleep, is a ginormous brown one. I try to move away slowly and quietly,

so I don’t wake him up. Too late. His eyes open and he looks over at me. I

freeze. I don’t know what to do but stare into his eyes—yellow eyes, the same ones

from my dream. It’s the same wolf. Weird.

I glance toward the back door and wonder if I can make a run

for it. He moves first. Rolling over onto his back, he draws his paws toward his

body and starts to whimper. He looks like a dog begging to get his belly

scratched. I use this opportunity to jump to my feet and race to the back door.

Safely inside, I lock the door and peer out the window. He’s in the same

position. He rolls over, stands, and looks toward the house before trotting off

into the woods. I lean against the door and take a deep breath.

What the fuck just happened?
