Chapter Twenty-Nine
SEBASTIAN
The idea of Damien and Olivia working together to get this leak situated makes me crazy , so I decide to insert myself into the whole mess.
I never said I was smart.
I’m old enough to know when I’m beaten. I’ve seen Olivia with Dominic, how her eyes shine with love for him. I’ve seen the way she and Damien dance around each other.
What can I offer that men half my age can’t?
But that doesn’t mean I’m taking this lying down.
I plan to get everything I can out of my relationship with Olivia, regardless of Damien and Dominic.
When I walk into Damien’s office, I’m grateful to not see Olivia there. I might have gone all caveman and taken her out of there over my shoulder or something.
“Are you busy?”
He looks up at me eyes wide.
I shrug. “Door was open.”
He nods. “I’m always busy. What’s up?”
He looks it. He looks frazzled, but that’s none of my business .
Except for how it affects Olivia. And all of it does affect her.
“I want to help with this leak.”
“You’re Titan’s golden boy, and you want to go behind their backs and help Olivia?”
“Yes.”
It’s a simple answer, but Damien tilts his head, his shoulders stiffening.
“Do you love her?”
Yes.
I shift in my seat. “I didn’t come here to talk about that. I came here because I care about Olivia, and I want to help any way I can to save her business.”
Damien narrows his eyes at me, but he doesn’t protest, sliding a few papers in front of me.
“This key code. It keeps coming up.”
I look up from the paper. “Who is it registered to?”
He waves a hand dismissively. “Roland Emerson. But he’s a longtime family friend, and he lost his key card a long time ago.”
“He didn’t report it?”
Damien sighs, as if he feels this isn’t important, but I do.
“I can punish him for a years’-old offense, or?—”
“Okay, okay. I get it. So whoever is using this keycode is the leak.”
“Has to be. There’s no other code that accesses the hall of records that often.”
“And you’re sure it couldn’t be?—”
“It’s not Roland.”
His voice is firm, unyielding, and I suppose he has some manner of loyalty to this guy.
I’ve met Roland a few times, and he seems to care deeply about Olivia, so I don’t believe it, either .
Still, I’m a little more removed from the situation, so maybe I can see things clearly.
“We have to stake out the hall of records.”
“Olivia and I tried that, but we got... distracted.”
Jealousy bolts through me. I settle my shoulders back. “I bet.”
Damien smirks, and I almost respect him for it.
“Why don’t we stake the place out?” I look at my watch. “It’s nearly dark. Let’s grab some food and go figure out who this leak is.”
“I’m coming with you.” I look over at the doorway to see Dominic standing there, and I groan inwardly.
What are we, the Three Stooges? All we have in common is Olivia—and our work, I suppose.
“Fine,” Damien says easily enough, and I look up at him. He shrugs. “We might as well work together. We all care about her. Right?”
All I can do is nod.
I have complicated feelings for Olivia, but it’s not like I can talk to them about it.
Can I?
“Let’s go.”
We pile into Dominic’s SUV and head to a diner where we load up on greasy food for our stakeout before returning to the building and parking in the back with binoculars.
Damien settles into his seat. “I have notifications set up on my phone if someone accesses the building or the room. I just need to catch them red handed.”
Dominic munches on his slice of pizza in the driver’s seat, and I wrinkle my nose.
“Anchovies? Really?”
“You haven’t lived until you’ve had pepperoni and anchovies.” He grins. “Olivia loves it. ”
“Olivia has... questionable tastes,” Damien says, and I snort out a laugh.
I kind of like Damien, despite myself.
Hell, I even like Dominic, despite his smug “I knew her first” thing.
“Hey, was that a dig?” Dominic pouts, and I laugh again.
“I don’t understand why we can’t all share,” I try, just testing the waters.
Dominic scoffs. “Sharing? I don’t share.”
“You shared the other night,” Damien points out.
“That’s different.”
I tilt my head. “Is it?”
“Sex is one thing,” Dominic says firmly. “Love is another. You two don’t know her like I do. You can’t love her like I do.”
“Maybe she wants to be loved by all of us.”
I hold up my hands. “Hey, I didn’t say anything about love.”
“Mhmm,” Damien murmurs, and I don’t like the look on his face.
“Mhmm what?”
He doesn’t answer, so I shove his shoulder.
He just takes it, even though he’s bigger than me and could probably throw me through the windshield.
“I’m just saying, this whole sugar daddy, fix me thing isn’t going to work long-term.”
I bark out a laugh. “I didn’t ask her to fix me.”
“Didn’t you?” It’s Dominic that speaks up, and I huff out a breath.
It’s tense and quiet suddenly in the car, until a notification pops up on Damien’s phone.
“Someone’s using the keycode.”
Dominic piles out of the car before I can blink, and Damien follows him .
I scramble out of the car, shutting the door gently, and bring up the rear.
Heels click on pavement, and a woman is on her way to the hall of records.
Dominic calls out, and she freezes before sprinting toward the parking lot.
I can’t see if they catch her, but when I finally catch up to the two younger men, they’re panting and looking around.
“She’s gone,” Dominic says, and then curses and kicks a rock across the parking lot.
“No, this is good,” I wheeze, wishing I’d gone to the gym at least once this week. Bless my high metabolism. “We know the leak is a woman.”
Damien nods. “It’s information, anyway. We need to talk to Olivia.”
I look down at my watch. “It’s nearly midnight.”
Dominic scoffs. “My girl is a night owl.”
Ours. Until this baby is born, she’s our girl.
But I don’t say it, not wanting a fight.
Dominic Hayes has something else coming if he thinks I’m going to quit with my tail between my legs, though.
Olivia Carter is something special. Something rare and precious I never thought I’d find again.
“Pay attention, old man,” Dominic snaps, and I blink.
“What?”
“I said, who’s going to call her?”
“I’ll do it.” Damien brings out his phone and Dominic rolls his eyes but there’s no real heat behind it.
It’s odd, feeling a sense of camaraderie around these two, but well... we do have something in common, after all. We all care about Olivia, and we all want to find this leak.
“She’s awake. Wants us to meet her at her place.”
We all scramble back into the SUV, and Dominic drives like a bat out of hell to get there. I’m clutching on to the side of the door for all I’m worth when we finally arrive.
He doesn’t use the valet, instead using Olivia’s other parking space.
It’s awfully familiar, and I don’t like it.
Damien huffs, and seems like he’s annoyed, too.
Dominic is so holier than thou because he met her first.
I hate to tell him, but Damien seems head over heels. I think he’s definitely going to be competition.
Not me, of course. Even though, I’ve been thinking about how she looked in my bed, her eyes puffy and sated.
I’ve missed having someone to wake up to.
When we arrive, Dominic walks ahead of both of us, and Damien stiffens his impossibly wide shoulders again.
Olivia opens the door smelling like lavender and wearing a robe over a little nightie. She looks delicious, but now isn’t the time to attack her, especially in front of Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum.
I kiss the top of her head when I walk in and that earns me a glare from Dominic, but I don’t care. I’m in the running as long as I might be this baby’s father.
And if I am? I’m not going to run off or be absent like my own father, throwing money at everything.
I’ll be there for Olivia and the baby, and if she wants to be a family, well... I’ll think about it.
It’s the most I can do.
I gave Sophie all of me, and if Olivia wants what’s left... who am I to tell her no?
