Chapter Thirteen
DAMIEN
I watch for Olivia to come into work every single day. I sit in my office, and there’s a way I can sit that gives me a direct eye line to the front door of the office.
I tell myself I’m not waiting for her. That I’m not worried she didn’t show up yesterday.
I tell myself that I haven’t been thinking of her nonstop since that night.
I’ve become pretty adept at lying to myself.
When she comes in the door, I stiffen, sitting straight up at my desk.
She looks pale. She must really be sick.
I want to call her into my office, see how she’s doing. But the words catch in my throat as she walks by my open door.
She’s wearing another one of those skirts of hers, the ones that make me want to bunch them around her hips and bend her over my desk.
I clear my throat, looking away from the long lines of her thighs.
A knock sounds on my doorjamb, and I look up eagerly, thinking it’s Olivia. Instead, though, it’s Marie, my personal assistant, and she’s carrying a file folder.
I sigh. “More signatures?”
She nods, walking in and shutting the door.
I raise an eyebrow. “Something private?”
“Kind of.” She bites her lip and sits down across from me. “It’s about Olivia.”
I blink. “What about Olivia?”
She looks up at me with wary eyes. “Olivia is... going through something.”
I try to relax my shoulders, knowing I look tense.
Of course, Olivia is going through something. Why else would she want a night like that night? She needed to let loose, needed to be taken care of.
“What’s wrong?”
She shakes her head. “It’s personal. Nothing I can talk about.”
I frown. “Then why are you here?”
She looks up at me. “Because I know how you feel about her.”
Her voice is quiet and small, but it sucks all the air out of the room.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh, come on, Damien. I work more closely with you than with anyone else. I see the way you look at her. Or rather, the way you don’t.”
“You’re not making sense.”
“I’m making perfect sense. But what I’m telling you is this—if this merger goes sideways, I don’t know if Olivia can handle it.”
“If that’s what’s bothering her, I can assure you. Everything is going fine. The merger is forging ahead without obstacles.”
“But?” She keeps looking at me expectantly .
I sigh. “But, what?”
“But there’s something else. Something you’re hiding?”
I take an even breath.
There are certain people I can tell the truth about this merger, and I’m trying to decide if Marie is one of them. She’s close friends with Olivia, and I don’t want this getting back to her.
I decide to trust her. I think she will put Olivia’s well-being over gossip.
“The merger isn’t just the right move for Carter Holdings. It’s the only move.”
“You’re saying?—”
“I’m saying we’re broke. Yvonne put in a lot of money to a lot of risky investments, and now, we’re cash-poor. This merger will change that. Titan has saved our ass, for lack of a better term.”
“But they’ll want to make changes.”
I nod. “Big changes. And Olivia is going to have a hard time with that.”
“So, we have to be there for her.”
I just look at her, not speaking, and she sighs.
“Come on, Damien. You’ve been by her side for years now, pining for her from afar. I know that you care about her, at the very least.”
“Of course, I do. She’s a... friend.”
“Friend.” Marie’s voice is dry and sarcastic, and I want to groan, but instead, I just set my jaw.
“If that’ll be all...”
“I’m going; I’m going.” She stands up and throws the folder down on my desk. “You really do need to sign those.”
I nod and as soon as the door closes behind her, I let out a long, shaky breath.
Telling her about the merger may not have been the right thing, but it’s better than confirming to her my feelings for Olivia.
I’d be humiliated if she told Olivia what a crush I’ve always had on her.
Even now, I know I’m probably the last person Olivia wants to be around. She only asked me to be there on a whim, maybe she just needed to fill out the roster. There’s no way she actually wants me.
She’s out of my league and always has been. Born with a silver spoon in her mouth, Olivia can never understand growing up without knowing where your next meal will come from.
We come from different worlds.
There’s no knock on the door, just the creaking of the door hinges, and I look up, furrowing my brow.
Olivia shuts the door behind her quickly, standing in front of my desk.
“Are you all right?” I ask after she doesn’t speak for a long time.
She has on what appears to be a forced smile. “I’m fine. All better.”
“Is there something you need from me?”
She swallows visibly. “About the other night?—”
I wave a hand dismissively at her. “Don’t mention it.”
She frowns. “But I want to talk about it.”
My eyes snap to hers. “You do?”
My heart flips around in my chest, and I curse myself for being so desperate.
I want her to tell me that she wants me again. I want to stand up and drag her over this desk, kiss her for all she’s worth.
“I think we should go out.”
I blink at her .
Of all the ways she could have ended that sentence, that was the last thing I expected.
“Go out?"
“Like, on a date. You know dates. Boy meets girl, boy courts girl...”
“This is the other way around.” I think I’m in shock.
How can this be happening?
She said it was a one-time thing, that she didn’t want to see any of us romantically.
She huffs. “So, will you go out with me or not?”
“Why?” I can’t help but ask.
She looks away, wringing her hands. “Because... Because I like you, Damien.”
“You what?”
I didn’t hear what I thought I heard. There’s no way that Olivia Carter, basis of all my darkest and deepest fantasies, said she liked me.
“I like you.” She looks at me with an exasperated expression.
“No, you don’t.”
Olivia groans, stalking around the desk and getting down on her knees in front of me, putting her hands on my thighs.
I shudder.
She smirks at me. “See? You like me too.”
“Of course, I—” I draw in a sharp breath when her hands flutter on my waistband. “Of course, I like you, Olivia. But the rules?—”
“Fuck the rules. I made the rules. And now I’m unmaking them. I want you to take me out. Somewhere nice.” She raises her chin. “I deserve it.”
My mouth turns up at one corner. “Is that so?”
She looks up at me with wide, pale green eyes. “Yes. I’m a good girl, aren’t I?”
I know she’s teasing me, but she’s making a pointed effort to look innocent with her eyes all wide, her mouth parted, and it’s doing things to me, sending an ache down my cock.
I’m getting hard at work, and this is completely ridiculous.
I shift in my seat.
“Are you?” I cup her chin with one hand.
She shivers, and I can’t help half-smiling again.
“I think you need to prove it.”
“After our date. I’ll be so good you won’t believe it.”
“Looking forward to it.” I drop my hand and look away, my cheeks hot. “Now get up before I put something in that pink, parted mouth of yours.”
She grins but stands up quickly, steadying herself on the desk.
I frown, standing up and taking her hand. “You’re still sick. You need to go home.”
She shakes her head. “I’ll be fine. I just need a few moments.”
I get a better grip on her elbow, leading her to the door. “I’m driving you home.”
She doesn’t protest any further and even leans against me as we walk out to my car, so she really
“Have you seen a doctor?”
She nods slowly. “I’m fine.”
She sounds tired as she leans her head against the window.
I pull out of the parking lot, heading toward town.
She gives me a few scant directions.
“Are you sure you don’t need to see the doctor again?”
Olivia is always so full of life, and she seems listless.
“I’m sure. It just has to pass.”
I pull up at her apartment complex, and she pauses as she gets out of the car.
“Why don’t you come in for a cup of tea? They can do without you at work for a while. ”
I look at my watch.
It’s nearly noon anyway, so I can take my lunch break.
Besides, my heart is fluttering around like a wounded hummingbird with all this attention and our upcoming date.
“All right.”
I walk her to her upstairs apartment, and she unlocks it.
It’s cozy, a small little studio, and there’re clothes flung over every piece of furniture.
She flushes and heads to the kitchen. “Don’t judge me. I hate folding laundry.”
“Me too. My maid does it for me.”
“La di dah,” she teases, and I laugh.
“Wasn’t always that way.”
She raises an eyebrow. “You didn’t grow up with money?”
I snort. “Nothing of the sort.”
Olivia looks at me curiously, like she wants to ask more, but I’m grateful when she doesn’t. It’s not a happy story.
She brews the tea and hands me a cup. She walks past me into the living room, sitting on the couch and gesturing for me to join.
“I wanted to talk to you, anyway.”
I grin. “About our date?”
“Kind of.”
“I’m surprised. You seemed so sure that it was a one-time thing.”
She shrugs. “Maybe it was. Maybe it wasn’t. I don’t know. All I know is that I want to spend some more time with you.”
“What about them?” I don’t know if it’s simple jealousy or envy that rushes through me when she pauses.
“I want to spend more time with them, too. I want to see all of you, see where things go.”
My heart drops to my toes.
So, it wasn’t that she realized how much she liked me and wanted to date only me. She wants to spend more time with all of us.
But at the end of the day, sharing Olivia means that I still get to have her, so...
“Fair enough.”
“You’re not upset?”
“I’m not exactly over the moon about you seeing them, too, but I’m willing to throw my hat in the ring.”
She smiles. “Really? I thought maybe you’d be the holdout, since you don’t really like me like that.”
I frown at her. “What are you talking about?”
“I know you only did it to make me happy.” She looks away. “I know you don’t really want me.”
“Olivia.”
She won’t look at me. In fact, I have a horrifying realization that she’s about to cry.
“ Olivia. Baby.”
I get down on my knees and crawl over to her, placing my hands on her thighs and looking up at her in a reverse of what she’d done earlier.
“Look at me.”
She doesn’t, and for a moment, I think she will ask me to leave, but her eyes finally meet mine, and she sniffles.
I squeeze her leg just a bit. “You have no idea what I want.”
“Tell me.” A breath.
“I’ve wanted you since the first moment I saw you.” The words come out of me before I can stop them.
I shouldn’t tell her this. I shouldn’t let her know how much I really want her. She could choose one of them, rip it all away.
Her eyes widen. “Liar.”
I grunt, my hands kneading the flesh of her thighs as I spread her legs .
She gasps but doesn’t protest, spreading them wider as I reach under her skirt.
I hook my thumbs into either side of her panties and tug them down and off her before spreading her thighs again.
I look down at her sex, which is already glistening, and a shudder of desire runs down my spine, making goosebumps pop up along my arms and the back of my neck.
God, she’s gorgeous.
I look down at her hungrily, taking my hand to spread her lower lips by putting my fingers in a ‘v’ and watching the pink flesh clench with desire.
“Look at you. Look how fucking gorgeous you are, baby.”
“Damien,” she gasps, rocking her hips slightly so that my fingers brush along her clit. “Damien, please.”
“Use your words. What do you want, baby?”
“You. Want you inside me.”
I chuckle, shifting so her legs loop over my shoulders.
“Not today. You’re sick. Plus, I told you the next time I’d be the one in charge, didn’t I?”
She moans low in the back of her throat when I lower my head and blow air across her clit, her thighs trembling under my hand.
“Please.”
“I told you, baby. Use your words.”
“Please kiss me there. Please eat me out.”
“Thought you’d never ask.”
I lap at her clit with gusto, tasting her mild but sweet flavor with a groan.
I’m hard as diamond in my slacks, but this is about her. This is me taking charge and giving her an orgasm.
I’d been too nervous before, been too focused on just being with her.
I take my time, latching around her clit, sliding my tongue down to her entrance, using my mouth to bring her right to the edge and then backing away.
She nearly screams when I do it a third time, and I look up at her, laughing softly.
“You’re such a fucking tease.” She’s trembling all over now.
“Oh, you wanted to come? Could have just asked me. Could have just used your words like a good girl.”
“ Please . Please make me come, Damien.”
“There you go, baby.” I go back to my task, this time not letting up even as she wiggles and writhes beneath me, gasping out my name over and over.
I wait until she’s tugging at my hair before I finally stop, panting and looking up at her.
“Fuck, you’re good at that.” Her chest is heaving, and I can’t help being a bit proud of myself.
I look at my watch.
“Time to go back to work.” I stand up, and she looks at me incredulously.
“You’re going back to work?”
“Somebody has to,” I joke, and she frowns at me.
“You’re not going to stay and let me take care of that?” She gestures to my crotch, and I fight not to flush.
“Saving it for our date.” I walk over to her, cupping her cheek as I kiss her gently.
She moans into my mouth and for a split second, I think about calling in for the rest of the day and giving her what she wants, but in the end, I stand up straight and leave.
I cannot wait for our date.
