Chapter Twenty-Four

OLIVIA

I take several deep breaths in my office, trying to calm myself down. Dominic showing up like that was unexpected, and I don’t exactly know how to handle it.

I can be angry at him all I want, but I know at least part of what he said is true.

My heart will always be partially his. He’s the first man since high school I’ve fallen in love with, and he’ll always be special to me.

Especially if this is his baby.

I can’t cut him out of my life, and if I’m honest with myself, even before this, I don’t think I could have.

We just have too much history.

What I have with Damien is new, exciting, but also oddly familiar. We’ve worked together for a long time, and now that things are changing, the dynamic is... well, exciting.

And Damien wanting me so badly? It’s hot. So hot, actually.

I’ve always found him attractive, but now I’m seeing him like it’s for the first time. Those hunter-green eyes, his strong jaw, his muscular body. The way he towers over me, cages me in with his arms...

I’m about to swoon like a Victorian maiden.

And then there’s Sebastian—mysterious Sebastian, with his dark past that he never lets me in on. I want to know what’s going on behind those piercing blue eyes of his.

I’m intrigued by all three of them, and this baby is going to make me choose. I need to find out who it belongs to, and quickly.

I plan to ask the ob-gyn at my appointment about paternity tests and if they’re safe for early pregnancy.

But Damien is too busy working to go with me, and Dominic is clearly too angry with me, so...

That leaves one option.

The appointment is at four in the afternoon, so I’m leaving work early. That’s what I'd gone into Damien’s office to tell him, it had just turned into something more.

As it seems to often do when we’re alone together, even for a moment.

It’s like he can’t get enough of me, and that’s swoon-worthy right there.

I call Sebastian, and he picks up on the second ring.

“Hey there, little girl,” he drawls, and he sounds so much different than the last time I saw him that it startles me a little.

He’s back to his playful self, it seems.

What was different about that day?

“Hey.” I’m a bit flustered after that greeting, but I try to ignore the heat on my cheeks. “Are you busy at around four today?”

He pauses. “I can be free if you need me.”

I huff out a breath. “I do. I have my first ultrasound, and I don’t have anyone to go with me. Everyone’s so busy with the merger... ”

“I’ll be there. Send me the location.”

He doesn’t even try to protest, and I can’t help that it makes happiness surge through me. He’s been so supportive through all of this, and I hope he knows that it means a lot to me.

He’s the only one of them who isn’t vying for my attention, just being there for me, and maybe it’s a result of his age and maturity.

Maybe dating older men is what I should have done all along.

Then maybe I wouldn’t be in this mess.

I leave the office at three fifteen, wanting to beat traffic, and I arrive early. I’m surprised to see Sebastian’s American muscle car already there.

He stands up against the hood, his arms crossed.

He drops them when he sees me get out of the car, smiling.

He hovers his hand at the small of my back to usher me into the doctor’s office, and when his fingers brush my bare skin under my blouse, I shiver.

“Cold?” he murmurs close to my ear, and I nod, not wanting to reveal that his touch affects me so.

He takes off his suit jacket, draping it around my shoulders, and his cologne assaults my senses, making my skin tingle.

I don’t know what he wears, but it smells good.

I go up to sign myself in, and he sits down in one of the chairs, crossing one leg over the other. I sit next to him when they’re finished taking my insurance card and information, jiggling my leg.

He puts a large hand on my thigh to stop me.

“Everything’s going to be okay, Olivia.”

“But what if it’s not?” I whisper, not wanting to be overheard in the small office. “What if something’s wrong? ”

He squeezes my thigh. “Then we’ll deal with it. But right now, we don’t know anything. So, don’t stress. Okay?”

I worry my lip between my teeth, but nod.

He’s right. There’s no need to jump to the worst-case scenario right now.

It takes nearly twenty minutes for the doctor to call me back, and Sebastian follows me without me telling him to.

“Hello, Mrs. Carter,” the ultrasound technician greets me.

I clear my throat. “It’s Ms.”

“So sorry. Ms. Carter. Is this the father?”

I glance over at Sebastian. “Yes."

She smiles. “Congratulations to you both.”

“Thank you,” Sebastian says, while I remain silent.

I’m so worried there’s going to be nothing to be congratulated for. I’ve been reading up on early pregnancy, and in the first twelve weeks, so many things can go wrong.

What if I’m not eating the right things? What if the baby isn’t okay? What if it’s my fault?

The technician helps me up on the table.

After the routine questions, she tells me to relax. “I think you're far enough along that we can hear the heartbeat. Let’s see.”

I pull up my blouse, and she squirts cold jelly onto my belly. I squeal at the sensation, and Sebastian chuckles, taking my hand.

He’s always so calm. I don’t know how he does it. I’m losing my mind, and he’s cool as a cucumber.

She moves the wand over my slightly swollen stomach, and panic crawls up my throat when I don’t hear the heartbeat.

“Just give me a moment.” She keeps moving the wand and staring at the screen, and I’m pretty sure I’m going to scream if she doesn’t?—

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh .

She smiles. “There it is. Strong.”

Tears spring to my eyes, and I don’t wipe them away. “So... he’s okay?”

“He or she.” She winks. “I’ll have the doctor take a look and come to see you. But between you and me, everything looks good.”

I let out a long sigh of relief, and Sebastian has gone totally silent.

The ultrasound tech points at the blurry screen. “There’s your baby. Just looks like a little peanut right now, but they’re growing arms and legs in there.”

I glance up at Sebastian since I haven’t heard a peep from him, and I’m shocked to see tears streaming down his face.

I squeeze his hand, and his eyes flicker down to mine.

He wipes at his eyes with the heel of the hand I’m not holding, giving me a shaky smile.

“Just makes it all seem real.” His voice cracks, and I hold his hand even tighter.

The ultrasound tech smiles at him, seeming bemused, and hands me a gown.

“Dress down, and the doctor will be in shortly.”

I hop off the bed, and Sebastian instantly pulls me into his arms.

“Thank you.”

“For what?” I frown.

“For letting me be a part of this. It means a lot.”

“Of course, Bash. I mean, it may be yours.”

“Mine…” He looks back at the screen even though it’s blank now.

I raise an eyebrow, confused by his sudden emotional display but feeling rather fond.

It’s rare to see Sebastian open up, and it’s... actually pretty adorable.

He sits down in a chair next to the bed, not even attempting to look away while I undress, his eyes moving across my body.

I flush. “Sebastian, please. This isn’t a striptease.”

“Could have fooled me.”

I snort out a laugh and turn, holding my hair up so he can tie it around my neck.

He does, but not before grabbing a handful of my ass.

I squeak, and he lets out a low laugh.

I’m glad to see him back to normal. Or... normal-ish.

It makes me glad that he was available to come with me.

The doctor arrives soon and after a truly mortifying check of my cervix, he takes off his gloves and throws them in the trash. “Everything looks good.”

I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.

“Are you sure?” Sebastian looks nervous for the first time all day.

The doctor smiles. “Don’t worry, daddy. I’ve been doing this for twenty years. Heartbeat is strong, and she’s carrying the way she’s supposed to.”

He looks at me. “I’m going to prescribe you some prenatal vitamins. Make sure you rest well and eat plenty. Don’t worry about weight gain. You’re already trim.”

“Um, I have a question,” I say hesitantly, and Sebastian raises an eyebrow. “Are... paternity tests safe?”

“Very safe, after birth.”

I bite my lip. “And before?”

“There’s a risk for miscarriage.”

All the breath goes out of my lungs.

“Then we won’t have it,” Sebastian says firmly, taking my hand.

I squeeze it gratefully.

“Is there... a question of paternity?”

I flush. “Yes, but... We’ll wait until after the birth. ”

He nods curtly. “Good. That’s best for the baby. And the mother. Try not to stress. It complicates pregnancy.”

Sebastian puts a protective arm around me. “I’ll make sure she rests and doesn’t worry too much.”

“Good. Any other questions?”

I shake my head.

The doctor nods, smiling again. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you.”

He exits the room, and I quickly get dressed with Sebastian’s help.

He tugs my blouse over my head, kissing my nose, and it makes me smile.

“Where to now?” he asks casually, as if he didn’t break down in the doctor’s office.

I sigh heavily, my feet aching. “Home, please.” I pause, not wanting to be alone. “Will you come with me? I was going to make dinner."

“Yes. My place instead of yours. But you’re not cooking. You’re tired.”

“I have to eat.”

“Then I’ll order in. What are you in the mood for?”

I groan. “Sushi.”

He laughs. “No sushi until the little one is here. How about some pizza?”

My mouth waters. “Pizza sounds really good right now, actually. Can I get pineapples on it?”

He wrinkles his nose. “No.”

I burst out laughing, and he sighs dramatically.

“Okay. For you, pineapple on pizza.”

“Blame the pregnancy cravings.”

“Gotta blame something ,” he mutters, leading me to my car.

I grin as I drive away, watching him follow me in the rearview mirror .

I can’t believe I’m feeling giddy over my father’s best friend, but things have changed so quickly.

Back at his penthouse, I head to the kitchen, taking out a soda from the fridge. “Would you like a drink?”
