I raise my head. “What?”

“I think it’s a fantastic idea. Most of my warriors see first-aid as a chore. I’ll be damn happy if someone takes a first-aid class willingly. If it goes well and you like it, you can take more classes afterwards.”

My mouth drops open slightly. “Really?”

“I think it’s a wonderful idea,” Luna Janice agrees. “Some of the nurses told me how seriously you take your work at the infirmary and how you took over tasks Jace didn’t originally put you on.”

Alpha Jace leans back, eyeing me thoughtfully. “Would you like to actually work at the infirmary?”

I rub my temples. “I’m not sure,” I admit honestly. “I just don’t know yet… what… and how… what I’m supposed to do.” Goddess, I sound pathetic. “I’m sorry.”

“That’s alright.” Alpha Jace furrows his brows thoughtfully. “You don’t have to decide anything yet, but we can continue with the 50-50 solution for now.”

“Is that an option?” I blink. “I thought I would need to go back to warrior training 100%.”

“We’ll keep it as it is for now,” Alpha Jace says with finality. “You can do both until you know what you truly want to do.”

I can’t believe it! I thought my time at the infirmary is coming to an end, and while I’m not sure if I want to stay there full-time, I also felt sad about leaving.

“You will get paid for your work from today on,” Luna Janice adds.

“Yes, you did well.” Alpha Jace nods. “I approve of how you’ve taken your second chance and helped the pack. Also, I know that you haven’t complained even once.”

“Why would I complain?” I ask, confused. “You could have kicked me out of the pack.”

It looks like Alpha Jace wants to say something, but then he exchanges a look with Luna Janice. “Let’s just say I appreciate you working hard,” he finally says. “You made mistakes, you owned up to them, you even lost your mate through them. You try to do better now, and as your alpha, I approve. Keep up the good work.”

I blink, a hint of pride filling me. It’s nothing I’m used to feeling. My father certainly never commended me for anything, and later, to please him, I did awful things that I didn’t feel proud of myself for.

Now to have my alpha tell me he likes what I’m doing… that’s new.

Before anyone can say something, Alpha Jace’s phone rings. He frowns. “That’s Elden,” he says to Luna Janice.

“Maybe they heard from Finn,” she says, sounding hopeful. “Luna Annalise called me earlier too and told me about the tracking device.”

I don’t know much about what’s going on, but I know that Finn hasn’t called in forty-eight hours. I try not to think about it too much and instead have my faith in the twins. They are capable and smart. Henry in particular is one of the smartest guys I’ve ever met, and Anthony is very spontaneous and can adapt to any situation.

I am sure they are alright. They have to be!

I’m still feeling slightly dumbfounded when I make it out of Alpha Jace’s office and out of the pack house. To my surprise, I bump into someone I hadn’t expected right at the parking lot. It’s Gamma Jun from Red Claw.

My eyes go wide. Shit, Dave’s best friend. “Hi,” I mutter.

Jun stares at me, equally shocked. Next to him I can see a young blonde guy. He is… he is the guy that greeted Dave when we were at the fair… the one I insulted. Another person on my list who I wronged. He elbows Jun now, staring at him.

Jun clears his throat. “Hello,” he greets.

I’m not sure how the fuck I’m supposed to react, but I assume acting like a representative of my pack would be good. And after all, Jun is of higher rank than I am. “Can I help you?” I offer politely.

Jun stares at me in surprise. “We have an appointment with Beta Deacon,” he says.

“I just saw him earlier,” I explain, feeling a bit anxious face-to-face with Jun. I’m just scared I will piss him off in a way and disappoint my alpha and pack further. “I’ll make sure to link him.”

Jun stays quiet, but his friend chimes in. “That would be nice, thank you.”

Their eyes gloss over, obviously mind linking. Jun sighs eventually. Meanwhile, I make sure to link Deacon, telling him his guests arrived. He seems to panic instantly because I’m alone with them and promises to hurry.

“He is going to be here in a minute,” I say.
