Page 74 of A Broody Mate for the Human
She doesn’t even turn her head to greet us. “Interesting,” she muses.
“What’s interesting?” I ask curiously, as usual, not able to shut my mouth. Raffy wraps his fingers around my arm, pulling me back and slightly behind him like he wants to protect me.
“A young human man with an interesting surname appears at the club with his presumed Dom, who happens to be a werewolf. That’s interesting.”
The way she says “presumed” makes my heart sink slightly. She knows we were just playing around.
She turns her head, her dark eyes staring at Raffy now. “I’m not going to hurt him.”
“Better safe than sorry,” Raffy says darkly.
“And your wolf?” Lady Portia eyes him lazily. “I assume he makes himself heard a bit more recently after being silent for so long?”
Raffy seems to be confused. “He does,” he answers tentatively.
“And you’re his bodyguard?” she asks.
“Tonight, I’m his Dom,” Raffy answers sharply.
Lady Portia smirks. “And tomorrow? What will you be tomorrow?”
“Whatever he wants me to be,” Raffy says.
I’m starting to feel confused. What the heck are these two talking about? It seems like they are tip-toeing around a subject but don’t want me to be involved. I clear my throat. “In case you forgot, I’m here too.”
Raffy glares at me. “I told you to stay quiet. It’s not safe.”
“Like Clarissa said, if you want to punish him for his sass, you can do so later.”
“Why does everyone want to whip me?” I complain.
Raffy furrows his brows and grumbles something into his non-existent beard. Lady Portia just sneers but then waves us over. “I’m intrigued,” she says. “So, let me take a look at it.”
I nod, nudging Raffy slightly. “It’s your turn.”
Raffy looks at me surprised. “What?”
“You remember part of the license plate, right? Lady Portia can help you remember the last numbers,” I explain.
“We are here for me?” Raffy asks, looking bashful all of a sudden.
“Yes,” I say. “To track my friend, Finn, we just need to go to my IT friends. We will do that tomorrow.”
Raffy still looks at me, completely surprised, but when Lady Portia calls him again, he finally follows and sits across from her. It seems catching him by surprise was good because when Lady Portia reaches out her hand, he follows her lead, placing his hand in hers.
I feel a sudden wave of jealousy rip through me by seeing them touch. Fuck, I hope she gets this over with fast. A slight smirk curls around the edge of her lips when she glances at me. Then she focuses back on Raffy. “Tell me what you remember,” she urges him.
He looks torn for a moment like he isn’t sure if he can trust her. When he tosses me a glance, I nod at him, and with a sigh, he opens up to Lady Portia. He tells her about how he woke up without a memory, as a rogue. He tells her about how his wolf succumbed to the loneliness but at least was able to give him some valuable information before he did so. He tells her about his dreams and how he dreams of this young woman who he feels he was cruel to, of the red-haired witch named Stella, and her red Cadillac. Lastly, he shows her the bracelet.
Once he is finished, Lady Portia leans back. Instead of looking sultry or teasing, she looks earnest now. “Thank you for being honest. Not many people are.”
“Can you help him?” I ask nervously.
She takes a sheet of paper and scribbles something down there. “This is the full number on the license plate.” She hands me the paper.
“How did you do that?” I ask, surprised. “It didn’t look like you were reading anything in his mind or doing any magic.”
She smiles slightly. “You truly are a piece of work.” She chuckles. “Raffy is going to have his hands full with you.”
