Story: Snow Hunted
The horse neighed in response and walked alongside me.
When we were almost back at the house, I heard a set of voices up ahead and paused for a moment, before I recognized Snow’s singsong voice.
“Snow?” I yelled out.
I turned the corner of the road and saw Snow and the others stopped in the middle of the road, talking to Jace.
“What are you doing out here, Garrison?” Enzo asked, alarmed.
“Hunting. Dresden is making rabbit stew for dinner and asked me to replenish the rabbits in Snow’s absence.”
Calix groaned. “Every time that boy gets in my kitchen, he moves everything around.”
“Did you get what you needed in town, Jace?”
“I did,” he patted his satchel.
“How was Ruby’s?” I asked the others.
“Good!” Snow said exuberantly. “Watch this.”
She started rubbing her hands around an invisible ball and, after a second, a ball of light appeared.
“It’s just a ball of light, but pretty cool, huh?”
I laughed. “So you were gone all day, and you learned how to make a ball of light?”
She huffed. “No, I learned some other things, but I have to practice them. I will have to do several more sessions with Lilibet before I’m anywhere close to ready. She said I was picking up things quickly, all things considered.” She looked at the horse beside me. “Is that…?”
“I think so.”
She reached her hand out, and the horse walked right over, nuzzling her. “She did this, didn’t she?” A tear formed in Snow’s eye.
Jace stepped forward and then stopped.
“What?” Snow asked.
Jace hesitated for a second, then said, “When I was little, I lived around a lot of witches, and they would oftentimes shrink and enlarge things. I think perhaps if you were to say dilatare, that will make him bigger.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Reducio to make smaller and dilatare to make bigger.”
“Do I just hold my hand out?”
He walked behind her and grabbed her arm, raising it in the air, and then flicked her wrist. “Move your hand like that when you say it.”
She turned to look at him, their faces inches apart, her breathing slow and steady. “Ok.”
Jace stepped back and squeezed her shoulders. “You got this.”
“Dilatare.” She said, flicking her hand, but nothing happened. “Are you sure that was right?”
He nodded. “Just flick your wrist a little more like this.” He said, showing her. She mimicked him a couple of times and then tried again.
“Dilatare!” She flicked and a light shot out from her hands and landed on the horse and he started growing in size.
“Oh, my!” she exclaimed and jumped onto Jace, wrapping her legs around him. “Did you see that? I did it!”
