Story: His Promise
“What?” I ask, sitting up straighter. “You’re not seriously taking me to that.”
“Of course I am.”
I shake my head. “No, you’re not. Tell them I’m sick. Tell them I—”
“Enough, Abi.”
I shrink on the couch, my back pressing into cushiony leather. My mind spins, searching for some valid reason for why Colter is crazy. I’m not going to the freakingmafia’shouse. Not willingly. Not only because it’s the last thing in the world I want to do, but also because Colter and I would never pass as a couple.Never. They’d figure that out in the first five minutes.
“I don’t know how I can be any clearer with you.” He sighs like he’s trying to reprimand a child who won’t listen. “We are going to dowhateverit is they want us to do. There is no other option. There is no excuse we can give. There is no way out of this. It is happening, wrap your head around it.”
I stay silent for what must be minutes trying to do just that, but I can’t. I don’t know anything about Colter. There’s no way this will work. The whole time, Colter sits in silence with that blank look on his face. I can’t tell if he’s actually giving me time to process or if he’s run out of things to say to me.
Lorenzo’s eyes stare back at me in my mind, and this is what it takes for the reality of the situation to hit me. A shiver runs up my spine.
Colter’s right. This is happening.
“Okay.” I blow out a breath. “Tell me what we need to do.”
