Story: Hello Doctor
I turned, looking at my friend in a suit. I’d expected him to look out of place when not wearing jeans and boots, but he cleaned up well. “What is it?”
He passed me an envelope, and I drew my eyebrows together, peeling back the flap and seeing a letter from Liv.
Dear Fletcher Madigan,
I’d like to formally submit my resignation from my duties as your nanny, effective immediately. I’m eager to assume my new role as your wife.
Love,
Liv
I chuckled, scrubbing my hand over my face and held up the paper. “Her letter of resignation.”
The guys around me laughed, and Rhett said, “Better than a bucket load of shit.”
“Or a dick on the hood of my truck.” I teased.
Dad shook his head like he didn’t want to know.
Rhett put his hand on my shoulder. “I never told you how excited I am to have you as my brother.”
I shook my head, hugging him. “You’ve always been my brother, Rhett.” My throat got tight as he clapped my back.
“Then let’s make it official.”

I stood in front of the floor length mirror in my room wearing my mother’s wedding dress.
My wedding dress.
My hair was curled into an up-do with a veil tucked into the bun. A necklace with Maya’s birthstone, a sapphire, hung around my neck for something blue. My engagement ring was old and my dress borrowed.
“Shit,” I muttered.
Farrah came closer, wielding the tide pen she kept on her person at all times. “Did you spill some mimosa on your dress?”
I shook my head. “I forgot ‘something new.’”
Rhett’s voice came through the door. “I think I’ve got something for that.”
I turned, seeing him coming into the room with all my bridesmaids. He tilted his head, putting his hand over his mouth. “Sis... you look.”
My eyes stung. “Don’t you make me cry, Rhett Griffen.”
He shook his head, coming to hug me. “That song is bullshit. Cowboys cry when their sister’s getting married.”
I hugged him back and when he pulled back, I said, “Does it count as new if I borrowed it from you?”
He reached into his pocket and got out his wallet.
I said, “I swear if you give me a condom.”
He tossed his head back, laughing as he took out a condom with a pink, shiny wrapper from his wallet. “I just got it from the store this morning. I usually use one with one of the bridesmaids, but I know all of them at this wedding, so...”
I hit his shoulder. “Are you ever going to grow up?”
