Story: Desire
Gathering her clothes, she nods, walking quickly to the bathroom. Standing I right my clothes, rolling my eyes at the racket at my door.
“Something better be on fire!” I yell, throwing open the door.
Blinking, I wonder who I pissed off in another life.
Fifteen
GRAYSON
I’m walking to the front of the facility to let in some dignitaries that are here for a surprise audit. I’m annoyed because while they’re allowed to do that, coming after seven is just obnoxious.
Unlocking the steel door in the intake section of the camp, I open it after verifying who is out there.
“I understand that you’re able to audit at a moment’s notice, but can I suggest coming during the day?” I ask, rubbing the back of my neck to keep my cool.
“I’ll take that into consideration,” Miss Hall says, who is a pain in the ass to work with. The Queen tends to send her when she wants a deep dive of records or programs.
I’m so glad that all of our paperwork is in order, and The Fucked Up Trio has reined in their crazy a bit. Two other men walk in behind her, and I lock the door behind them.
“Where would you like to go first?” I ask politely, even though this is the last thing I want to be doing after a long ass day.
“I’d like to go to the records room,” Miss Hall says decisively.
“Do you have anyone else who can walk us around? I need to check on the nutritional section. There’s been talk in the kingdom that we need reform in our correctional facilities. I need to prove that our inmates are well taken care of,” says the man with a pinched look.
Oh, that’ll be a blast. This is Mr. Myers, and he tends to listen too much to the reform movements in the kingdom. There are much more important things to worry about than the health of our inmates, though I worry about that enough.
It’s one of the reasons that our poor infirmary is so busy, and I make mealtimes as mandatory as I can. I can’t force people to eat, as my dangerous girl is evidence of.
“Yes, I’m sure I can accommodate that,” I murmur as we begin walking. Gods, I’m going to owe Patricia more overtime.
“The Queen also wanted me to look into the educational aspect of Section A, and as we need to fill some positions that became available recently,” Mr. Todd explains.
I force myself to keep my face impassive, because this only happens when the queen executes her “employees” or missions go badly. Neither is good, because now we need to find recruits that are ready to enter the field. Fuck, that also means that he’s going to want to see Issac, and there’s no real way to warn him.
Why did I get out of bed today?
“Unfortunately, as it is the end of the work day, Isaac may be in his room,” I explain as we move into the emptying hallways.
“Really? I really need to get this information out to her,” he complains, checking his watch for the time, wincing as he realizes it’s closer to eight now.
“You’re welcome to check his office, but I just don’t know if he’ll be there,” I lie, knowing he’s with Silla right now.
“That’s unacceptable, Warden,” Miss Hall states, shaking her head. “You’re charged to accommodate our concerns whenever we drop in. It’s not our fault that we didn’t have the time to come until now, and you’re several hours from the main city.”
The Queen wanted us to be far enough away from the world so that no one would look too closely. It makes it inconvenient for her when she needs to check on us, though. I also don’t understand why they’re here, when they did an audit a month ago.
“I have limited staff at this time, so you’re welcome to talk to whoever is still in their offices,” I insist, hoping they’ll decide it’s too much of a hassle to go to his room. “We work long hours here, and my staff needs to rest when the inmates do. We have security staff to look after the facility after hours.”
“This is a correctional facility,” Miss Hall yells, startling a staff member.
Nodding to the wide eyed employee that I’m fine, I face the interminable women next to me.
“It is, and our facility is one of the best run in the realm. Yet, you’re constantly dropping by at all hours, insisting on different paperwork to look at. Everything is always in order,” I remind her.
“That may be true, but I really am here under the Queen’s orders. We all have lives, and I want to be done here in the next three hours at the most. Next time, we will attempt to be here earlier,” Miss Hall says, trying to make nice.
“Alright, I’ll take you to the records room, Miss Hall and assign someone to help you pull anything you need. Then, I’ll walk Mr. Myers to our head nurse, and finally Mr. Todd to Isaac’s office. Any questions?” I ask.
