“Not this time, but you might have been.”
She shivered with delight when he ran his tongue over the wounds in her neck. “It feels so good when you drink from me, the last thing I want is for you to stop.”
“I know.” He held her close. Keenly aware of how tempting her blood was, he usually fed before he came to her. Tonight, he’d been so eager to see her, he hadn’t taken the time. He wouldn’t make that mistake again.
He took her out to dinner, insisted she have several glasses of wine.
When he would have filled her glass again, Rosa held up a hand in protest. “I can’t hold any more.”
With a nod, he set the bottle aside. The color had returned to her cheeks, her heartbeat was strong and steady.
They left the restaurant a short time later. “Where do you live, Jake?” Rosa asked as they walked to the car. “All I know is that it’s some place in Montana.”
“I have a house in Butte.” He opened the car door for her, closed it behind her before going around to the driver’s side.
She watched him slide behind the wheel and start the car. “Oh?”
“It’s not much,” he said as he pulled out of the parking lot. “But I’m rarely there.”
“Where do you stay when you aren’t there?”
“Wherever I want.”
“I thought maybe you lived near Morgan Creek since Saintcrow wanted me to meet you.”
“It only takes a thought to get there no matter where I am.”
She nodded. How could she have forgotten that? “Where does Rhinehart live?”
“Somewhere in Wyoming.”
“And the necromancer?”
Kincaid shook his head. “I don’t know. But I suspect he lives in Wyoming, too.”
“Is Rhinehart still hunting you?”
“Yes. And no. I guess you could say we have a truce.”
“What kind of truce?”
“A temporary one. He’s afraid of Luca, and he wants a talisman like mine, something that will hide his presence from the witch. He asked me to help him get one.”
Rosa stared at him. “He’s a hunter and he asked for your help? Doesn’t that sound kind of fishy?”
“Yeah. But he seems like a decent guy, for a hunter. Enough talk about Rhinehart,” Kincaid said. “I can think of more interesting things to do.”
Rosa batted her eyelashes at him. “Can you?”
“Can’t you?”
“Definitely.”
“Damn girl, don’t look at me like that.”
“Like what?” she asked innocently.
“You know like what,” he growled, and stomped on the gas.
