This was bad, he thought.
Very bad.
Chapter Forty-Nine
Rosa took a deep breath when her phone rang. She considered not answering then huffed a sigh. She had to talk to him sooner or later.
“Hi, Micah,” she said brightly. “What’s new?”
“Not much. Just thought I’d call since I haven’t heard from you for several days. Everything okay?”
“Peachy.”
“Uh-huh. Where are you?”
“In Morgan Creek.”
“With Kincaid?”
“Of course. I know you don’t approve,” she said quickly, “but you’d best get used to it.”
There was a long pause. “What have you done, Rosie?”
“Not what you’re thinking! I told you, I wouldn’t do that without telling you first.”
His sigh of relief came through the phone loud and clear.
“How’s Dad?”
“He’s doing well. I thought you’d have come to see him by now.”
“I’ve been meaning to.”
“But?”
She bit down on her lower lip.
“Rosa, what aren’t you telling me?”
“There’s been some trouble,” she said. “It’s too complicated to explain over the phone and it doesn’t directly involve me. Just Saintcrow and Jake.”
“Are you in any danger?”
“No. I’m fine, just worried.”
“He’s no good for you, Rosie.”
“I love him, big brother. Please try to understand. Remember how you felt about Holly? Well, that’s how I feel about Jake.”
He sighed again. “Come and see us when you can.”
“I will. I promise. Tell Mom and Dad I’ll be there as soon as possible.” She stared at the phone after Micah said goodbye. She hated keeping secrets from him. As soon as this mess with Luca was cleared up, she’d go home and tell him everything.
She looked up when Jake materialized in the living room, frowned when she saw the troubled look on his face. “What’s wrong?”
“I had a phone call from Saintcrow while you were talking to Micah.”
“Oh?” Judging by his expression, it hadn’t been good news.
