Blowing out a breath, Rosa went to answer it. As she had suspected, it was Micah.
“What the hell were you thinking?” he demanded as he strode into the living room. “How could you introduce that killer to our family?”
“Excuse me?”
“Don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about. I’ve heard about Kincaid.” He shook his head. “All those lies tonight. What are you going to do when the truth comes out?”
“I don’t know. And don’t you dare talk to me about killers, Micah Ravenwood! Not when your best friend is a master vampire who imprisoned hundreds, maybe thousands, of people for his own pleasure!”
Micah stared at her. And then he grinned. Rosie had always come out fighting when she knew she was in the right. Lifting his hands in surrender, he said, “All right, you made your point, little sister. I just hope you know what you’re doing.”
“Me, too. I think I’m in love with him, Mikey. I’ve never felt this way before.”
“Yeah. Well, I guess we don’t have much control over who we love. Just remember, I’m on your side, no matter what.”
“I know.
“Have you told Sofie about Jake?”
“No.”
He grunted softly. “Do you want me to?”
“I don’t know. Maybe.” She frowned, and then she nodded. “I think you should. If you tell Sofie now, it’ll give her time to get used to the idea before she gets home.”
“I’ll take care of it. Just be careful, Rosie. I don’t think he’d hurt you intentionally, but … Just be careful,” Micah said again.
“I will. Usually, when things start to get too hot, or Jake feels like he’s losing control, he leaves.”
Micah blew out a sigh. “Just don’t take any chances or do anything stupid, all right? And don’t be afraid to call me if you need help,” he said, giving her a hug. “See you soon.”
“Don’t forget to let me know what the doctor says about Dad.”
“I’ll call you as soon as I know anything.”
Rosa sighed as she walked him to the door. With Micah on her side, everything was bound to be all right.
Chapter Twenty-Four
Kincaid called Paul Rhinehart soon after he left Rosa’s house.
The hunter answered the phone on the second ring. “Hello?”
“It’s me. I found the witch. She said she could magick a talisman for you.”
“That’s great news! Thanks.”
“Slow down, cowboy. She wants something in return.”
“I should have known,” Rhinehart said. “What does she want?”
“Something that belongs to Luca. An item of clothing. His wand. A dagger. Something he values that has his scent on it.”
Rhinehart muttered a pithy oath. “That won’t be easy.”
“Nothing ever is.”
“What did she require from you?”
