“I guess so.” She toyed with the hem of her sweater. No doubt she would be hearing from Sofia as soon as Micah could get in touch with her.
“Are we okay?” Jake asked.
“Why wouldn’t we be?”
“Your brother’s pretty strong for a vampire who’s only a few years old. I guess he’s got Saintcrow’s blood to thank for that.”
Rosa shrugged.
“Who turned your brother?”
“I guess you know all about Morgan Creek,” Rosa said. “About what it used to be?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, my brother was turned by one of the vampires who once lived there. He told the family about it the night he admitted he was a vampire. It happened after Saintcrow freed all the people and sent the vampires away. He told us how a female vampire had found him and turned him against his will and everything that happened afterward.”
“Lilith,” Kincaid said. There had only been one female vampire in Morgan Creek. “I met her a long time ago. Nobody liked her.”
“That’s what Saintcrow said.”
“Enough talk about your brother and the past,” he said, draping his arm around her shoulders.
“What do you want to talk about?”
“Talk is overrated,” he said, caressing her cheek with his fingertips.
Her heart skipped a beat as his gaze moved over her. She went into his arms gladly, her eyelids fluttering down as his mouth covered hers in a long, searing kiss that drove Micah and everything else from her mind. There was only Jake, his lips teasing hers, his big hands lightly stroking up and down her back, her thighs, skimming the curve of her breast.
She stilled when she felt his tongue lave her neck.
“Rosa?”
“Just a taste,” she murmured, her heart pounding. “Promise?”
He groaned low in his throat, his voice husky with need when he said, “I promise.”
She held her breath as his fangs lightly pierced her throat, heard him moan with pleasure as he drank from her. One taste. Two. Three … Her fear that he would take too much faded away as pleasure took its place. What was he doing to her?
“Jake?”
He growled low in his throat as he ran his tongue over the punctures before lifting his head.
“You said just one.”
“I know.” He gazed deep into her eyes. “Forgive me, love?”
“I guess so.” How could she refuse when she was almost sorry he had stopped.
“I’d be happy to let you drink from me.”
She stared at him, only then remembering that Kadie had once asked her if she had tasted Kincaid’s blood. She asked Jake the same question she had asked Kadie. “Why would I want to?”
Kadie hadn’t answered her.
Jake said, “You’ll like it.”
“I don’t believe you.”
