“I’ll have one now,” I say of the chocolate.
He brings one over, opening the wrapper for me.
“Tell your ‘wife’ I said thanks,” I say before taking a bite. “This is rather generous of her.”
“Will do.”
Flared eyes scan my body, my bandaged leg and arm, the scratches on my forehead.
Savoring my chocolate, as well as this glorious view towering over me, I ask, “Is your brother really not gonna come see me?”
“No.” His jaw tightens. “He’sreallyfucking pissed at you.”
I wanted to look at you without you knowing I was looking at you.
My heart expands and bursts into a swarm of butterflies.
“I’ll get going.”
As he’s turning to leave, I drop the chocolate and grab his hand. “I know it’s you, True.”
His shoulders are so tense, I want to blow gentle breaths across his skin until all the tension evaporates from him.
On a sigh, he drops his head. “Let go.”
“No.”
He tries to extricate his fingers, but I hold on as tight as my feeble state allows.
“London—”
“I’m a wounded patient. You’re obligated to be nice to me.”
“So is that why you pulled the shit you did?” He turns to me. “To get my attention? You could’ve just picked up the fucking phone and called me if you wanted to see me this much. Didn’t have to try and get yourself killed.”
“Hmm. Did I try to save your client’s and his daughters’ lives to get your attention?” I roll my eyes. “No, you narcissist.”
He gives me a look of incredulity. “I’mthe narcissist? Me? You’re the one who walked in that place like… like—I don’t know who the fuck you think you are. Do you think you’re invincible or something?”
For some reason, I’m unable to stop from smiling. Is it because he’s here, so close I can smell him, touch him, feel his heat?
I gesture to my wounded leg and arm. “Evidently not.”
“She’s smiling,” he muses to himself, shaking his head as if he can’t believe the nerve of me. “I swear, if you weren’t already bedridden….”
Biting my lip, I fight back my grin. That hit to my head must’ve been worse than we thought. Because why am I so damn happy right now? “What would you do?”
He grumbles something inaudible in his throat and sweeps a hand down his face. “Where’s your Prince Charming, anyway?”
“He broke up with me. A few days before the incident. He said he’s still in love with his ex-wife, and he was gonna try to make things work with her.”
If his jaw clenches any harder, it’ll break. “I’m gonna beat that fucker’s face in.”
“Why? I’m glad he did it, so I didn’t have to.”
“What?”
“He’s a great catch. Perfect, actually—”
