Jules:Maybe I’ll just pray instead and also ask for forgiveness, because I made a terrible mistake messing with fate. Even the blind can see that those two are in love with each other.
Lexi:Do that, yes. Pray, smell some salts, whatever. Just keep your ass quiet.
CHAPTER Thirty–One
“You’re lucky I love you.”
True
Sweaty and thirsty from alate-night run, I get home to an overstuffed suitcase on my living room floor and my sister-in-law pacing in the kitchen.
“Uh, can I help you?” I ask, removing my earphones.
She stops pacing, glares at me, then promptly flounces in my direction and slaps me across the face.
“What the fuck, Lexi?”
“You knew, didn’t you?”
Women are fucking crazy. “Knew what?”
“The truth about Tor manipulating me to make me believe he cheated on me.”
I rub my jaw. “Oh, that.”
“‘Oh, that,’” she mimics childishly. “My husband just felt the need to ‘come clean,’ so yeah, I punched him in the face and packed a bag. I’m gonna be staying here for a couple days because I can’t stand to look at his ugly face right now.”
“But, uh, we kinda have the same face, though….”
“I swear to God, True…” She shakes her tiny fists in my face. “Don’t piss me off!”
“Okay, okay, fine, you can stay.” I step around her and head for the kitchen. “Use the guestroom.”
It’s not uncommon for me to end up in the middle of things and get threatened for my brothers’ dumb decisions. Lexi’s anger is warranted, butIdidn’t do shit.
Long story short, two Garza brothers wanted her—one more than the other. She chose one—Torin—and they dated until he decided he wanted a relationship with his brother more than he wanted a relationship with her, so he manufactured a fake cheating rumor to get her to dump him. Confessed the truth to Trent years later, and Trent, afraid of losing Lexi, chose not to tell her.
Until now. For some dumb damn reason. Some truths just need to stay buried, man.
“So, what prompted him to come clean?” I grab a bottle of water from the fridge and twist off the cap. “Did you finally tell him about the little one?”
Lexi halts her mad pacing. “What are you talking about? What little one?”
Well, shit. I’ve done it again. Pointedly, I lower my gaze.
Her hands fly to her belly, eyes widening. “No.”
I shrug and take a gulp of water.
She points an accusing finger at me and starts moving backward. “No, you’re not doing this weird witchcraft shit to me like you did with my sister, Jules, Carol, and even Monica when she was pregnant with Tillie.”
“It’s not witchcraft,” I defend through a chuckle. “You think I like knowing this shit? I’d be happy to trade this gift with something cooler, like super strength or an extra cock. Hell, take this ADHD shit that keeps fucking with my life.”
“You’re a freak! I’m not pregnant.”
“Sure. Whatever. I’m off to bed. Make yourself at home.”
I’m halfway up the stairs when she chases after me, grabs my hand and drags me back down. “You’re coming with me.”
