“Why?”
“Because I’d want to know I was going to be safe.”
Chapter 9
I stare at her,not sure I’ve heard the words correctly. We both finish and, on the ride back, make small talk, but I can’t shake her words.I’d want to know I was going to be safe. The car arrives at the hotel, and enter the lobby. I see Elena and Bradley sitting at the bar, deep in conversation, and I give a small wave. She waves back, and Sam watches the exchange.
“I can see myself to my room if you want to go hang out with your friends.”
“They aren’t my friends, and they seem to be a bit preoccupied. I’ll walk you up.”
“It’s fine, really. I can get myself there.” She pushes the button for the elevator and enters as the doors slide open. I step in after her, and the doors close silently behind us. “I’m fine, Tait. Thank you for a lovely evening. I will meet you downstairs tomorrow with coffee. Is there anything else you will be requiring?”
“Yes, there is one thing I need.”
“Oh, great, what? I’ll make note of it.” She rummages through her purse looking for her phone.
I lean closer to her so my lips barely graze her ear. “Kneel.”
I watch her eyelashes flutter closed over her flushed cheeks. The reluctance is gone, and she lowers herself to the ground in one seamless motion. This gorgeous, dark-haired beauty is kneeling in front of me, her palms resting on her thighs, and it takes all the restraint I have to not unzip my pants and make her suck me off.
I know from our conversation tonight that doing so would cross so many lines and she would run from me. I swallow past the lump in my throat and run my fingers down the side of her face. She shivers under my touch.
“Do you trust me?”
“I’m not sure, Sir.” The word is so airy on her lips, and it makes me want to do everything to her.
I extend my hand. “Stand.” She takes it and stands but keeps her eyes down to the ground. “Look at me.” She does, no hesitation, but I can see the fear in her eyes.
“You don’t have to be afraid. I understand you don’t want to get involved because of your job, and I respect that. I can also tell you that if we were to do anything, things won’t change. You will still be my personal assistant, and I won’t fire you because of anything. Do you understand?”
The doors slide open on her floor, and she moves to leave. I block her exit. She holds my gaze with her own as the doors slide shut behind us, and we ascend to my floor.
“I’m still waiting for an answer.”
The doors open again, this time on my floor, and we both step off the elevator. We slowly start walking toward my bedroom when she answers.
“I fear I’m a little too drunk for this conversation.”
“What if, just for tonight, I don’t expect anything but the two of us helping each other out? You help me and I help you?”
I watch her eyes darken as a sexy smirk appears. The gears in her head are turning; I can tell she’s trying to figure out how this will go wrong.
I take a step closer and whisper, “Sam, I’ll take care of you. I promise.”
She shivers, and I place my finger under her chin, pulling her lips to mine. They’re soft, and she pushes her body against me, adding some strength behind the kiss. She fists my shirt in her tiny hands and deepens the kiss, a quiet moan filling the air between us. I pull back and look into her dark, lust-filled eyes. She licks her lips as she looks at mine and then back to my eyes.
I’m screwed.I’ve never had a kiss as heated and sexy as that one, and I’ve kissed a lot of women.
“Does that mean you are willing to accept my offer?” I whisper back.
“Yes. Just for tonight.”

In all theyears of me inviting a woman back to my room, I’ve never had one fall asleep on me in the few minutes I spend in the bathroom freshening up, yet here we are.
I shred my shirt prior to coming out of the bathroom, giving her the chance to ogle my perfect body—I know it is, no use in being modest—and I see her curled up in a little ball, sleeping on top of the covers.
