He finally showed up.

I peek around the staircase, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. And…also hoping I don’t see a damn thing.

His voice is like a soothing balm to my aching body. I immediately curse myself for feeling this way.

I hold my breath, afraid I’ll miss what they say. Of course, it’s hard to miss Daddy’s yelling.

My heart thunders in my chest. It pounds so hard my ribs actually hurt.

A minute later, he’s in his truck, driving away.

Well, there you have it.

He finally showed up.
