Page 92 of Secrets We Fight
He didn’t question why we’d spent less than fifteen minutes working out. Instead, he said into his mic, “Windstorm is en route to the nest.”
We stepped out into the hall, and Day gave us some room as we walked toward the elevator.
“I’m not usually one to turn down sex or anything, but I think I’m just going to go upstairs and take a shower. Can you order us pizza?” I asked Rhett.
“Of course.”
“Then maybe we can watch a movie in bed before we pass out?”
“You’re okay with me staying tonight?” He pressed the button to call the elevator.
“Yeah, but I can’t promise I’ll make it to the end of the movie.”
My phone buzzed in my pocket, and with a quick glance at my watch, I saw it was Uncle Sean returning my call. I’d called him about Declan because I knew my friend would be an excellent intern at Ashford, Nolan & Torrance.
“I need to take this.” I stepped back from the elevator and answered the call. “Hello?”
“Fallon, it’s Uncle Sean. My assistant gave me a message you called. Is everything all right? I heard about you getting shot.”
“Yeah, I’m on the mend, but I was calling because I need to ask you a favor.”
“Oh? What’s up?”
I looked out the window to the street one story below. It was getting dark, and rain was coming down hard. “A buddy I attend law school with applied for an internship at your firm. I know there are a lot of people who have, but please consider my friend Declan because I know he’s a worthwhile candidate.”
“I was hopingyouwould apply.” Uncle Sean chuckled.
“You know criminal law really isn’t my thing.”
“I know, but I still dream of adding Donnelley back to the firm’s name one day.”
“Could still happen if I decide civil rights isn’t my thing either.” I smiled warmly at Rhett and Agent Day as they waited patiently for me.
“I would love that. So, what’s your friend’s name?”
“Declan Rivers.”
“Okay. I still want to interview him, but I’ll keep in mind that you’ve vouched for him.”
“Thanks, Uncle Sean. I appreciate it.”
“Of course. How are your mom and dad?”
“You know, busy running the country.” I snorted.
“I’m surprised Mary isn’t with you now.”
“Oh, she wanted to be, but I refused and told Dad to keep her in D.C.”
“And Finn?”
I took a deep breath. “He’s in D.C. and supposedly getting treatment.”
“If there’s anything I can do, please tell your dad to call me.”
“I’ll tell him, but I’m staying out of anything that has to do with Finn.”
“Should we expect a different kind of fireworks display this Fourth of July?”
