Page 90 of Secrets We Fight
I couldn’t help the smile that passed over my face. “Still, I’m grateful for the opportunity to prove myself to you again.”
Tanner folded his hands on the table in front of him. “You have nothing to prove to me. I know you’re a damn good agent. The agency just needed to make sure there wouldn’t be any issues with you remaining here with us.”
“Understood.”
“Having said that, it’s my understanding Monroe explained to you what to expect if you stayed.”
I nodded. “He did.”
“Well, in case you need a reminder, when you are off duty, you are to defer to your colleagues. At those times, you’re simply a guest of Mr. Donnelley’s and not an agent. As long as we’re clear, I want to welcome you back to the team.” He stood and stuck his hand out.
We shook.
“Thank you again, sir.”

After pickingup my stuff from my apartment, I made my way back to Fallon’s place. When I walked inside, he was on the couch in the living room with Agent Bernard standing nearby since shift change had happened while I’d been away.
“Hey, Bernard,” I greeted and dropped my duffle bag next to the door.
“Hey. I’ll give you two some privacy,” he said and turned toward the kitchen.
A part of me had been concerned about running into my colleagues after my relationship with Fallon became public knowledge, but so far, no one had said anything negative to me.
I dropped a brief kiss on Fallon’s lips before sitting next to him. “I have some news.”
“I’m hoping by your tone it’s good news.”
I couldn’t stop the grin from spreading across my face. “It is.”
“Well, spit it out already,” he demanded when I didn’t continue right away.
“Looks like you’re stuck with me on your protection detail.”
His eyes widened. “Seriously?”
“I won’t officially be back until my leave is done in four days, but yeah, I’m here to stay.”
Fallon wrapped his arms around my neck and then grimaced in pain.
“I’m glad you’re excited, but you need to take it easy.”
He nodded. “Yeah. I’m just so happy things worked out.”
“Me too, baby boy.”

By the endof Fallon’s first week back at school, I had rarely left his side. We’d settled back into a routine, and while the first couple of days of class had taken a toll on him, he seemed to be making a lot of progress physically. However, it didn’t stop me from worrying.
Anytime he left the house, I was on high alert, not just looking for threats but also watching him to make sure he wasn’t in too much pain, and checking that he had everything he needed.
When his final class of the day ended, I bent down and picked up his bag. Long gone were the days when I sat a row behind him. Since he’d returned to class, I sat right next to him.
“I got it.” Fallon snatched the bag from my hands.
“I’m just trying to help.” I frowned.
