Page 85 of Secrets We Fight
“Ma’am, please call me Rhett.”
She nodded. “He’s been sleeping since I arrived.”
I sat in the chair next to his bed. “He was awake for a little bit this morning, but he did say he was tired. I’m sure the pain medication is contributing to that.”
A few seconds later, with his eyes still closed, Fallon asked, “How’d your meeting go? Are you still my sexy bodyguard?”
My eyes widened, and I peeked over at the First Lady and then said nervously to Fallon, “Um … I’ll find out in two weeks.”
“What will we do if they move you?” His voice cracked.
I’d spent every moment since I had been relieved of duty asking myself that same question, and only one answer made sense.
“Then I’ll turn in my resignation.”

FALLON
“Do you have a three?”Rhett asked.
I checked the playing cards in my hand. “Go fish. Do you have a King?”
“Go fish,” he said after he drew a card from the deck.
I drew a card too.
“Knock, knock.”
I looked toward the door to see Declan saunter into my hospital room. “Hey.”
“How are you feeling?” my friend asked.
“Like I live in a nursing home and am playing cards with my hot nurse.” I winked at Rhett.
He rolled his eyes. “I’m not your nurse.”
“No, but we could role-play.” I smirked.
“So, I see you’re doing well.” Declan chuckled.
“As well as I can be.”
“I can’t believe you were shot.” Declan pulled a chair closer.
Rhett and I filled Declan in on the shooting. In the last twenty-four hours, the FBI had arrested Joseph Hughes in connection with my attempted murder. I didn’t know more than that.
“Wow. That’s some crazy shit. I thought the Secret Service was supposed to keep you safe?” Declan questioned jokingly, then glanced at Rhett. “No offense.”
Rhett held his hands up slightly. “Things would have been different if I had been there.”
“How so?” Declan continued to ask questions.
Rhett reached over and grabbed my hand, Declan’s eyes following and widening. Then Rhett told my friend, “Because I would have been the one shot.”
“Wait …” Declan waved his hand between the two of us. “You two are—”
“Cat’s out of the bag,” I said and then glanced at my man. “Rhett and I are dating.”
