Ro left the bastard on the ground. He wasn't worried about the man trying to attack him. He knew he was out cold and wouldn't be getting up since Ro had done a number on him. Fortunately for the bastard, he was still breathing, so he could count himself lucky. If it had been another wolf, Ro would have torn him apart, and he would have been within his rights, since technically they would have committed an offense in his territory.

Ro couldn’t stay away with his mate giving off high distress pheromones, but he could see the man was clearly terrified, so he approached slowly.

“Hey, I need to get him arrested. He tried to assault you.” Roman moved cautiously, trying to not scare his already terrified mate.

Ro didn’t even have a moment to process the fact he now had a mate. All his alpha instincts were focused on protecting and soothing the man.

“No cops, no police.” His mate shook his head adamantly.

“The sheriff’s my cousin. I promise, he will make sure the bastard gets what's coming to him.”

His mate gulped, and no matter how much calming pheromones he was sending the smaller man’s way, he seemed to be in a state of abject fear.

Ro looked around, and that was when he noticed Rex had stepped out. He met the other man’s gaze and glanced towards the alleyway.

Rex looked at Roman’s mate, and the alley. Roman wasn’t sure the man understood what was going on, but he nodded.

Ro decided to take his mate home, and they could figure out the rest later. At the very least the bastard would know better than to come back to Rex’s bar.

“Do you know who I am?” Roman asked.

His mate shook his head.

“Do you want to come home with me?” Ro asked. He held his breath, because he wasn’t sure he could do more for his mate standing in the parking lot of a bar.

The man began shaking his head, and Ro’s heart sank. He knew he wouldn’t leave his mate alone, but he also couldn’t force him to come home.

Yet before he could suggest driving the man to his home, his mate whispered, “Yes.”

“Yes, you’ll come home with me?” Ro confirmed.

“No police?” His mate double-checked.

“If that’s what you want,” Ro agreed, even though he hated to, but he hoped Rex would get the asshole arrested and they could figure it all out later.

His mate nodded, and slumped into his arms as if he was tired. He wasn’t passed out, but he was basically a sack of potatoes. It was like he’d been carrying so much on himself, and finding Ro was the first chance to let it all go.

He wasn’t complaining. Ro realized this was why his wolf had been restless, their mate had needed them.

He didn’t question, he didn’t understand, but Ro knew this was the reason.

Chapter Four

Devon

Devon wasn’t sure what had gotten into him when he agreed to go with the stranger, but his wolf had purred for the first time in years, in pleasure. His wolf wanted to burrow next to the man and never leave.

That alone was out of character enough for Devon to follow the man, but that wasn’t why he had. No, Devon knew when an alpha had sized him up as their next meal. Survival instinct had taught him to spot a man with not so good intentions, and even though alphas in general scared him, he didn’t get that vibe from this alpha.

Or maybe it’s wishful thinking. Maybe you’ve finally lost it.

No, that wasn’t it. There was something about this alpha that had Devon drawn to him. And since his whole life—at least since he’d known what a brutal alpha could dish out—was spent trying to stay away from any alpha’s radar, to be drawn to one and feel… safe?

Yeah, that was how Devon felt. It was such a foreign emotion for him that it took a second to pin it down, but it was how Devon had felt in his… no,thealpha’s arms.

Devon knew that he would probably have to take off soon, especially if the cops got involved, because he had a feeling Anton would have reported him missing. Not because he cared about Devon, but because, for one, it wouldn’t do to give other omegas ideas about trying to leave.

“Where are you taking me?” Devon managed to ask, as he looked around the road they were driving. There were no street lamps and it was all forest to each side.
