Page 20 of Safe in His Arms
It was morning, that much he could tell, but he wasn’t sure what day it was, or how many days had passed.
Devon felt different, but the same and the craziest part was he could feel his mate next to him, and he didn’t mean just physically, but it was like he could feel him in his heart, and his head.
He tried slipping out of the…hisalpha’s arms, but woke him up, and Roman’s arms tightened around Devon.
“Going somewhere?” Roman asked, then pulled Devon tighter against his chest.
Devon was overwhelmed with everything that he now knew. He didn’t realize it was something he could do until he did it, but he read his mate’s feelings about him, saw every moment from when they met in his mind, kind of like a film reel.
“Wow,” Devon breathed.
His mate chuckled, “Figured out the mate bond I see.”
“I… wow…” Devon repeated.
Roman laughed, “You’re going to have use more words, mate of mine. Although, I guess technically you don’t have to, since I can feel how happy you are.”
“I’ve never…” He couldn’t even finish his sentence before bursting out in tears. “I didn’t think it was real,” Devon whispered.
“I know,” Roman said, his arms tightening around Devon, pulling him closer, which basically had the omega on top of his alpha.
“I thought… you know…” Devon shrugged, “I kind of hoped it was real, because you were so nice, but then I figured if it wasn’t, then… well, you were the nicest alpha I ever met, so that wouldn’t be so bad.”
“I know, baby,” Roman replied.
“You said you loved me?” Devon whispered the words, even though he’d seen it in his head. After one of their times together, he’d been deliciously sated, and his mate had kissed him tenderly and whispered, “I love you.”
“I do…” Roman replied.
“No one has ever loved me…” Devon said, his voice still a whisper.
“Well, that’s their loss… and definitely my gain,” Roman said.
“I think I love you too,” Devon whispered.
“Well, until you’re sure, I’ll be sure enough for both of us.”
Devon took a moment to check in with his body. He realized he was sore in several places, but the good kind of sore. He’d also realized he could check into his mate’s mind—goddess, would saying that even get old? He had amate.
It wasn’t just another shitty hand he’d dealt.
He realized that it was four days later and that his mate had taken care of him. Even though he’d done his best to clean them up though, Devon definitely needed a shower.
His mate laughed, and Devon had to ask, “Can you hear my thoughts?”
“I can, but you can turn them off if you want, kind of block them from me. Just think about a wall in your head, and picture keeping me out.”
Devon did as his mate directed, but his heart started hurting so he stopped. “I don’t like it.”
His mate kissed the top of his head, “Neither do I. And my thoughts are open to you as well.”
He checked what his mate said, and yup, there they were. There his mate was. After being lonely for so long, having someone right there was… more than he could ever put in words.
“I love having you there too, mate, but you’re right. You definitely need a shower and I’ll go make breakfast.”
Even though his mate was right, Devon’s wolf, and himself… they were both enjoying being cocooned in the safety of his mate's arms. And he didn’t want to let go.
“I promise I’m not going anywhere, but you need a shower, and I want to feed my mate.”
