It didn’t matter. The alpha’s shirt hit him just above his knee. so he could get away with wearing it as a dress. All Devon needed to do was get back to the bar. It wasn’t until he’d gotten in the shower, he realized that he’d left his backpack at the bar.

He never left it at the campsite, even his tent and sleeping back were hidden in the storage room at the bar. He was lucky his bosses had never found it.

Devon opened the door to his room as quietly as he could. He listened to make sure the alpha wasn’t walking around, but thankfully with his wolf hearing, he could tell that the man was asleep from his even breathing next door.

He held his sneakers in his hands and tiptoed past the alpha’s room. Devon held his breath. He was so fucking thankful the floors were carpeted.

He made it all the way to the front door, and opened it, but as he stepped outside, Devon heard voices and other sounds that told him that the pack was awake.

What if he went out there and someone grabbed him and brought him back here? The alpha would be even madder.

He considered shifting and running into the forest, but since he was unfamiliar with it, he could get lost or worse.

He was trapped.

While he panicked, he didn’t hear the door to the alpha’s room opening. Apparently, in his agitated state, Devon forgot to be quiet, and he’d banged the front door shut.

It wasn’t until the alpha’s voice from behind startled him that Devon realized his mistake.

“Hey, where are you going?” Roman asked.

Devon twirled around, his back pressed against the front door.

“I want to leave. You can’t keep me here.” Devon straightened his shoulders and put on a façade of bravado.

“Keep you here?” The alpha’s brow furrowed.

“Yes, I want to leave and I couldn’t find my clothes. You hid them, didn’t you?” Devon could hear the panicked edge to his voice, but he couldn’t seem to control it.

The alpha stared at him for a second. Without a word, he turned, walked to the end of the hallway and made a left, disappearing into a room.

Devon looked around, but couldn’t find anything to use as a weapon. There was an umbrella holder to the left, with one large umbrella in it. It wasn’t much, but he grabbed it and held it in front of him like a weapon.

It didn’t take long, but the alpha came out of the room he’d gone in to. That was when Devon noticed Roman had his clothes in his hands.

Without a word, the alpha stopped a couple of feet away from him and stuck both hands out. Devon wasn’t sure how to respond, so he held the umbrella in one hand and grabbed his clothes.

“You’re not a prisoner here, and you can leave whenever you want. I won’t stop you,” the alpha’s voice sounded subdued and a little sad. “But, I do wish you would stay,” Roman added.

Alphas didn’t beg, but that was what it sounded like.

Devon held the umbrella and clothes to his chest. “You took my clothes.”

“I put them in the wash, and then the dryer. I figured you would want clean clothes when you woke up.”

“Oh,” Devon wasn’t sure what to say to that. Of all the things that had gone through his mind, that hadn’t even made the list. “Uh, thank you?”

“You’re welcome,” Roman replied. “Obviously I thought it went without saying, but I guess I should have said it anyway. You’re not a prisoner here, you can leave whenever you want, but you’re my mate, and I wish you would stay… maybe we could get to know each other better.”

“My heat…” Devon’s face flushed red. Even talking about it made him uncomfortable. “It’s coming.”

The alpha nodded, “I know.”

The alpha sniffed the air. He tried to be discreet, but Devon could tell, and his cheeks reddened further—if that was even possible.

“You still have a while. I know we have a lot to talk about, and if you want I can leave you here to ride it out alone, but I was hoping we could talk, and then maybe…”

It was the alpha’s turn to blush, and it was fascinating. Devon didn’t think alphas got embarrassed.
