“Fuck, let me call them before they hear it elsewhere.”

His cousin laughed, “Congratulations, cuz. You have no idea how lucky you are.”

Ro heard the longing in his cousin's voice. Yea, he hadn’t realized how lucky he would feel having a mate. Ro had never felt like anything was missing from his life. He had his brothers, a job he loved, packmates that were like family to him, his parents, and his uncles.

He hadn’t thought he needed anything more to make his life feel whole, but just being around Devon showed him how wrong he was.

“I feel like the luckiest man on earth,” Ro told his cousin honestly. “Never got why y’all were in a hurry to find your mates, but Goddess I would kill for him.”

His cousin sounded wistful, “I can’t imagine. But you almost did, didn’t you? I swear, it looks like the man had an unfortunate collision with a brick wall.”

“He’s lucky he’s breathing,” Ro growled.

“I know, cousin, I know. I’ll let everyone know you need a few days before the family descends on you.”

“Thanks cuz.”

Chapter Eight

Devon

After Roman left him alone, it took a moment for Devon to fall asleep, even though he was lying down on the most comfortable bed ever. He didn’t even know beds could be this soft.

For the first time in a long, long time, the only thing on his mind wasn’t survival, or Anton. It was the alpha down the hall from him.

Everything about him was different from everything Devon had ever experienced. Devon tried recalling everything he’d heard whispered about fated mates, but all he knew from the little that was still spoken about it in his pack was that it was a gift.

Yet the finer details escaped him.

Devon had no prior…anythingto compare it with. He wasn’t sure he could think of a fated couple in his former pack.

Wait, yeah you do Rex and Parker.

So, the alpha… Roman—he like saying the man’s name—Roman had pointed out that Rex and Parker were fated. Okay, sure, they were a beta and omega pairing, but that didn’t make them any less fated.

Haven’t you been jealous of the way Rex treats Parker?

He had actually.

Since he’d seen the way the two of them treated each other, he’d kind of wanted that for himself, but it had seemed like such a faraway dream.

Maybe that’s why your wolf told you to stick around longer. That made sense, because this was the longest he’d stayed in any one place.

Devon sighed. He knew he had a lot to figure out, but his wolf told him they were safe, and he should sleep. Since he was exhausted, and the guest door was locked—not that it would keep a determined alpha out—Devon went to sleep.

The last thought in his mind was Roman. His brain and maybe even his heart told him that the alpha was nothing like the alpha who’d used him for years and treated him like dirt.

Devon didn’t know if it was the whole fated mates thing, but there was something about the alpha, something good, special and not scary. And if he only got to experience it for a night, then it was more kindness than he’d received previously—especially from an alpha.

When Devon wokeup the next day, he could tell his heat was coming, which was wrong. He shouldn’t be in heat again for another three weeks. He’d just had his heat. Crap, he had to leave, ride it out in solitude before his pheromones were too strong for an alpha to ignore.

He got out of bed and searched for his clothes, but he couldn’t find them. Crap! Where were they? Devon went into the bathroom and checked in there, but still nothing.

Could the alpha have taken his clothes to keep him from leaving? How hadn’t he noticed?

Fear crawled up his spine, and he wondered if maybe he had misjudged the alpha. What if the man had lured him into a false sense of security, and he was now trapped?
