“So he’s the head of some mafia family?”

“Yeah, but he lives across the country. Has nothing to do with our city.”

“Do you think he was here at some point in the past and that he kidnapped you?” I cock my head at him.

“I don’t know. Maybe. But if he kidnapped me, he’d be dead. My father wouldn’t have just let him go.”

“Then maybe he saved you?”

Alessandro presses his lips into a tight line. “He may have been my father’s business associate or something. My father never really talked about any of it with me because he never thought I’d need it, and I never found any of his documents or files that he kept. His second-in-command was the only one who knew where that stuff was hidden, but he was killed too.”

Well, that’s another thing we have in common. Our families keeping us out of the business part of our family legacy because they had a different purpose for us in mind.

“Maybe you can talk to him,” I say.

“It looks like he’ll be attending some business party. We can fly there and get to it in time. I have a company that kind of fits for what the party is about, so I can get us invitations without anyone suspecting anything.”

My eyebrows rise up. “We?”

“Yeah.” His gaze meets mine. “You’re my wife. I need you.”

Ah yes.

I need to be there and look pretty so everyone can be distracted while Alessandro does whatever it is that he’s going to do.

But oh well. I won’t mind getting to see something new. It’s not like I’ve traveled much. It’ll be a nice change.

Chapter 39

ISTOP DEAD IN MY TRACKSwhen I see the dress that I’m supposed to wear to the party. It’s laid out on the bed in our hotel room, and it looks exactly like the one I sketched.

I rush to my bag, searching for my notepad. I’ve taken it with me so I wouldn’t be bored during our flight. As I quickly flip through the pages, I realize one page is missing.

The one with the long white and green dress.

The same as the dress on the bed.
