“Why?” she asks.

“I should have been watching.”

She doesn’t answer, but her shaking stops soon after, and I hear her breathing slow down. She’s drifted off to sleep, but I stay awake for hours holding her.

Chapter Fourteen

Brooklyn

I wake up in his arms. We’ve already broken the second rule, and I don’t care. I snuggle closer to him. I never want to move.

He’s stroking my hair. “How do you feel?”

I lean back, so I can look him in the eye. “I’m okay.”

His eyes drift down to my neck, and he winces. I reach up and touch it. “Does it look bad?”

“It doesn’t look good. I wish Hawk had let me finish that guy.” His eyes are dark, his face pinched.

“You did plenty,” I say, touching his arm.

“You need to give a statement today; do you want me to...”

I don’t let him finish that statement. Instead I stretch forward and press my lips to his. For a moment, he doesn’t react, but when he does it’s heated and intense. His hands are in my hair, and my hands are pressed against his bare chest.

He pulls back and says, “Are we still doing the over the clothes thing?”

“Did the condoms arrive?”

“No.”

I bite my lip.

“There’s a lot we can do without...”

“I know. I’m just not comfortable with that.”

His face darkens. “Are you afraid I won't stop?”

“No. No, I’m afraidI won’tbe able to stop.”

Surprise flashes across his face and then desire. He swallows slowly and then nods. “Tell me what you are comfortable with.”

“Let’s touch ourselves.”

A line forms between his brow. “Like you want me to jerk off right now?”

I smile. “Well, both of us. Together. Don’t you want to watch?”

“Of course, I fucking want to watch.” He leans his head back and laughs.

“Okay, no touching,” I say as I sit up and reach to the back of my bra.

“Oh shit.” His breathing hitches as he watches me.“I really can’t touch?”

His eyes are all pupils.

“No touching.” I pull each of my bra straps down off my shoulders slowly, keeping eye contact with him the entire time. I unhook it in the back and let it fall off.
