“Nope. Me neither, but we have to start somewhere.” He stared at the unopened laptop. “I’m not ready to see yet.” He sighed heavily. “How much has he hidden? Has he caught the thing in the garden on video? Would it terrify us?” Micah pressed his hand over his heart and bowed over the table like it hurt to breathe for a minute. I was out of my chair in seconds and wrapped around him. “What if it takes me again?” Micah whispered after burying his face in my shoulder.

“Then it better take me too, ‘cause where you go, I go.”

“I’d rather it not take either of you,” Sky said. She sighed. “I’ll watch the videos. Give me a headset. You guys can read without the creepy background noise.”

I glanced her way, surprised that she’d want to delve.

“I’ve reviewed video for you guys after tours a lot.”

“What if you see some monster in our garden?” I asked.

She shrugged. “Met a lot of monsters in my life. All have looked human so far, maybe a real monster will be a good change? Anyway, I’d like answers too. How he found me, and why he’s so distant. Does he keep me close just because he wants to make sure I’m safe? Not sure that’s enough to build a relationship on. Give me the computer.”

I handed it over, still hugging Micah tight. Reading files about spooky places I could do, stare at video of things that go bump in the dark, maybe not right this minute. But that was okay. We had about two dozen places to sort through. What the fuck was going on in Lukas’s head? I did everything I could to avoid all this weird stuff and he seemed to be throwing himself into it? Was I a coward to avoid it? I had thought it was common sense. If something bad had taken over, ripped me out of my life for a while, wouldn’t anyone with reasonable intelligence avoid having it happen again? What did that say about Lukas?
