CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
Sienna
“Are you nervous?” Grayson asks as he navigates us into the parking lot at OBGYN’s office.
I can’t believe I’m already halfway through this pregnancy. I’m nervous, but I’m also excited. Today’s a big day—the anatomy scan. I asked the guys to come with me, and they all happily agreed.
“I am,” I say, because they do these scans for a reason. There are a ton of things they could detect. “But I’m happy I get to see the baby again.”
I’m smiling at him as he puts his truck in park. I glance over my shoulder at Warren and Tucker, who are sitting in the back seat.
I tried to have Warren sit up front because he’d have more room, but he wasn’t having any of it.
“I’m excited you guys get to see the little one, too,” I say.
They all sound their agreement before getting out of the car. Before I can even think of opening my own door, Warren is there.
“You know I can open my own door,” I tell him with a half-hearted grumble because with my bump, it’s harder to move around than it used to be. I can only imagine what it will be like in a few months.
He’s so used to my protests, he doesn’t say a word. He just holds out his hand to help me down.
I’m working on this whole accepting help thing. I swear. I am.
We walk as a group into the building and into the elevator. When we all step into the waiting area, I can’t help but notice some of the looks we get.
I mean, I can’t really blame them. One woman with three different men at an OBGYN office must be rather unusual.
After getting checked in, we all sit down together. As we’re waiting, Tucker’s hand, which was leaning on the armrest between us, starts tracing up and down my leg.
I don’t even know if he’s fully aware of what he’s doing right now, but I revel in it nonetheless.
He’s been different this last week. He doesn’t seem like he’s pushing me away with all his strength anymore.
He still isn’t back to the same guy I started to fall for months ago, but I feel like I have a piece of him back now, even if I can only have him in my life as a friend.
“Sienna,” a woman says, poking her head out from the doorway. I walk toward her. All the guys follow behind me.
“Oh, you’ve got a whole entourage,” she says, laughing as she guides me into the ultrasound room.
“I guess you could say that,” I say, sitting on the exam table.
The ultrasound tech looks over at the men who are now standing against the cabinets on the opposite side of the room. “Which one of these lucky guys is the daddy?”
All their fearful eyes snap right to me.
I laugh a little nervously. “Don’t know exactly. We’re going with all of them until proven otherwise.”
“Gotcha,” she says, showing no signs of judgment. She leans closer to me. “I wouldn’t want to choose between those three hotties either,” she adds with a wink.
A smile spreads across my face. Exactly. I glance at her name tag that’s pinned to her scrubs. Lidia is my new favorite person at this office.
She gets me set up and presses the wand to my stomach. Instead of training my eyes on the screen where I know the images will appear, I look at the guys.
I can tell the moment they see the baby.
Every part of Warren softens, like his outside is finally reflecting his inner teddy bear. Grayson’s eyes take on a glossiness, even though I don’t see any actual tears fall.
Tucker freezes. He looks like all the air has been sucked from his lungs as his whole world has shifted around him.
Finally, I turn to look at the screen. Now it’s my turn to have tears spring to my eyes. I don’t see a little blob on the screen anymore. That’s a baby. My baby.
The tech goes about zooming in and measuring everything she needs to, while I stare at the screen in wonder.
All three of the guys have migrated over. They’re right beside me on the opposite side of the tech.
“Do you want to find out the gender today?” she asks as she types numbers into the keyboard with her free hand.
Shit. I knew this was going to be a possibility today, but I hadn’t made any decisions yet. I turn my head toward the guys.
“What do you think?” I ask them.
“What do you want?” Warren asks in his gruff but gentle voice. He grabs my hand.
“I think I want to know,” I say, looking up into his eyes. Then I look over at the other two, who are both nodding.
“Then we want to know,” Grayson says, looking from me to the tech.
“Yes, tell us if we’re having a little fireman or a fire lady,” Tucker says.
“I don’t love that idea,” I say, cringing. “Having you all be firefighters is enough as it is.”
“Oh my god, they’re all firefighters,” Lidia says, looking right at me. “You are one lucky lady. No wonder you don’t want to commit to just one of them.”
I can’t help the laugh that bursts free. She’s talking about them like they’re a museum exhibit at my side, not three living, breathing men.
“Do you want me to tell you all now or write it on a piece of paper to look at later?” she asks.
Now that the possibility of finding out is right here, I don’t want to wait. “Now?” I ask the guys.
They all nod in agreement.
Lidia adjusts the wand on my stomach to get the right angle. “Congratulations. You’re going to have a little girl.” She turns to look at Tucker. “Or I guess a fire lady.”
Tears are no longer just building. They’re sliding down my cheeks. I’m going to have a little girl. A daughter.
The guys are all now touching me in some way, connecting us in this moment. Pain slices through my heart.
The fragility of our situation smacks me in the face. Only one of these men is biologically the father. What’s going to happen once we find out who that is?
Grayson told me where he stands with everything, but will that still stand true if the baby isn’t his?
What kind of future can we have in this strange friend zone with lingering pieces of what we had before? Could it ever be more?
I can’t dwell on all this right now. I need to focus on the three wonderful men who are here at my side.
They are here. And we’re going to have a little girl.
“Oh,” I say, loudly. My hand flies to a spot on my stomach.
Grayson’s head twists to the right to look at me, while he continues to drive. “What’s going on?”
“I’m pretty sure I just felt her kick.” Wow. It feels so strange to say “her” out loud for the first time.
I glance at the backseat. Tucker and Warren are both straining against their seat belts, leaning forward.
“Really?” Tucker asks. His voice is still filled with the same awe he had in the ultrasound room.
“I think so,” I say, shrugging my shoulders.
“Like a bubble popping almost,” Warren says.
“Kind of, yeah,” I say, nodding. “I’ve felt that for a few weeks, but I didn’t really know for sure if that’s what it was.”
“I’m not surprised,” Grayson says. “She was moving around a lot in there just a few minutes ago.”
The genuine smile plastered across his face warms my heart.
“Can we feel it yet?” Tucker asks.
“Probably not,” Warren says. “She’ll need to get bigger and stronger for us to feel her. Right now, that’s just for her mama.”
Holy crap. I don’t know what it is about this pregnancy journey, but sometimes things just smack me upside the head.
I’m going to be a mom. A girl mom.
