Lana
I t’s Saturday around lunch time when my phone starts ringing. It’s Scarlett calling, so I pick up. “Hey.”
“Hi, stranger! What are you doing tonight?”
“No plans tonight. Why, what’s up?”
“It’s been too long and we’re too busy. I need to have a girls’ night and see you guys!”
“Agreed. Why don’t you and Paige come over? If you want Matt to come, he can. I have the guest room you guys can sleep in and Paige can stay with me.”
“You’re so thoughtful, Lana! He said he’s cool on his own. I think him and Grant are going to do something. I personally was thinking we need lots of alcohol and movies.”
“Yup. You and Paige should have lots of alcohol.”
“That was supposed to include you too.”
“I’ll fill you guys in when you get here.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? You have secrets from us?”
A couple.
She continues. “You went on a date with Grant, didn’t you? How could you not tell me! He hasn’t stopped talking about you since that dinner. I knew you two would hit it off!”
“Nope. I’m not getting anywhere near a guy, especially one with a man-bun. Why do we have to keep having this conversation?”
“Oh.” She pauses. “Then what are you hiding? Years together and we’ve never had a secret. I get engaged and my girls’ lives are falling apart! ”
I smack my forehead, dragging my hand down my face. My eyes meet Queenie’s who humphs. Scarlett is still going on and on about how she knew life with Matt was going to change things. I need to cut her off before this becomes a five-hour lecture.
“Listen Scar, just come over tonight and I’ll get you caught up, okay? See you soon! Love you, bye!”
I wipe my forehead after hanging up the phone. “Phew. You’re going to have a lot of fun tonight. My friends are nuts.”
Queenie stares at me and crosses her paws at her spot on the couch. Since I’ll have company, I better clean up a bit.
As I’m picking up things around my place my phone rings again. I look down at “Paige” calling. Scarlett must’ve told her I have some secrets. Can’t they wait to find out what they are until tonight? Geez.
“Hello,” I drawl.
“Hi! Scarlett just called me and said you have some things you’re hiding?”
“That happened like two minutes ago.”
“I know. That’s why I’m calling. I’m so excited for you! You finally moved on with Grant!”
“What? Why does everyone think I’m going out with Grant?”
“Have you seen the way he looks at you? It’s like you’re the only one around. Plus, you never know when your right guy is around.”
“Listen, I’ll fill you guys in tonight. FYI it has nothing to do with a guy. Bye, Paige!” I hang up the phone.
“Ugh!” I shout at the room.
Queenie becomes concerned and comes over to me. For some reason she thinks rubbing her behind on my legs is comforting.
I pet her anyway and after a few pats I go to my task of cleaning. I hate cleaning, but going to anyone else’s house won’t work since I don’t know what the dog will do. It’s only been a week .
I check my phone, and just as I suspected, not a peep from someone missing a dog. We went on a run this morning and I was asking other runner’s going by, but they had no idea who the dog belonged to. I think Queenie is my new buddy.
I’m glad we found each other. At least someone in my life isn’t pushing me to date. I just have to get through the prying questions I’m sure tonight will bring.
