Another read that she was at my apartment, but I wasn’t opening the door.

Siobhan’s texts kept going and going, and each one got longer and longer.

I sunk to the toilet seat and scrolled through the rambling declarations of love and then I stopped when one of them said,

I didn’t want to tell you like this, but my period is late. I think I might be pregnant.

My hand went to my neck. The message was more than an hour old.

With my hands shaking, I called Siobhan up. “What is this about ye being pregnant? Are ye messin’ with me?”

“No, I swear. It’s the truth. I just went to buy a test, and I’m about to take it to be certain.”

I closed my eyes. I’d always wanted kids, but not like this. Siobhan and I had discussed children, and I knew she wanted a whole flock, but we hadn’t even been together for a year, and we didn’t see eye to eye on many of the fundamental things in a relationship.

“But ye were on the pill.”

“The pill is not a hundred percent, Damian.”

I cursed on the inside and rubbed the bridge of my nose. “Do ye want me to be there for the test?”

“What are ye going to do if it’s positive?”

I groaned low and sucked in a deep breath. “If ye’re carrying my child, I’ll take care of it, of course.”

“I think ye should come, and we should do the test together. Where are ye now?”

I hesitated. “With a friend.”

Siobhan had to know it was Lumi, but she didn’t probe. Instead, she just spoke in a soft voice. “I’ll wait for ye.”

“All right. I’ll come right over.”

Tucking my phone back in my pocket, I walked out of the bathroom to see that Lumi had set the small round dining table with napkins formed as flowers. The lovely scent of coffee, fresh toast, and bacon drifted toward me, but I couldn’t see Lumi.

“Lumi?”

“I’ll be right there.” Her voice came from behind her bedroom door.

Walking to the table, I snatched a piece of bacon. I hated that I would have to tell Lumi that I couldn’t stay and eat with her.

“Do you like it?”

Her voice came from behind me and made me turn, only to get the bacon stuck in my throat when I inhaled sharply from the incredible vision of Lumi in the hottest lingerie I’d ever seen on a woman.

Gaping, my instinct was to fall to my knees to worship her, but my phone buzzed in my pocket again, reminding me that I needed to go and clean up the situation with Siobhan before I could allow myself to indulge in more sex with Lumi.

“Lass, ye take my breath away.”

Lumi laughed and smiled, and it physically pained me to step forward and add, “But the thing is that Siobhan texted me a gazillion times this mornin’. She thinks she might be pregnant.”

Lumi’s smile stiffened in a grimace before it evaporated. Her stance changed from relaxed and flirtatious to tense when her shoulders pulled up, and her arms wrapped around her waist.

“It’s probably nothin’, but I promised Siobhan that I’d come by and do the test with her.”

“And if she’s… pregnant?” Lumi whispered the last word.

I didn’t answer at first but walked over to touch her shoulders. “Lumi, last night was incredible, and no matter what happens, I’ll never forget it.”
