Page 56 of Falling for A Lie

The gentle creak of the floorboards, as I slide out of bed, is overshadowed by the sound of footsteps outside my door. I make my way to the door, pressing my ear against the cool wooden surface. The sound of an unfamiliar voice startles me, causing me to stumble back and accidentally bump into the heavy iron bed frame. “Ow..what the fuck..” Draco and Sirius stand beside me growling loudly as my locked door begins to shake as if someone is trying to force themselves in. My stomach drops as the realization hits me, someone is in our house and I have no idea how I can get to the others, god I’m so fucking stupid for choosing to sleep on the first floor. Panic seizes my heart as I look around frantically for a lifelinecatching sight of my gun resting on my desk beside the window.

The sight of the open window entices me with the promise of an escape from whatever is waiting for me on the other side of the door, I could easily slip out but that would be all, I’d be out of the house and Carla and the guys would still be in here with whoever is on the side of the door. Slowly inching toward the desk, I grab my hoodie and slip it on over my tank top. After checking the clip to ensure it is loaded, I slide it into place. The clicking of the lock sends a wave of certainty, reassuring me that I’m not as screwed as I initially thought. Standing still, I hear a loud crash coming from above, exactly where Carla’s room is. The sudden noise jolts me to my core, filling the once-tranquil house with a bone-chilling scream that pierces through the air. The sound echoes relentlessly, assaulting my ears and intensifying my fear.

Meanwhile, the persistent banging continues, creating a disconcerting symphony of chaos and distress. As I’m about to rush towards my sister’s aid, the rattling at my door demands my attention, pulling me back into the immediate danger that surrounds me. With trembling hands, I reach for my phone, the smooth surface cool against my fingertips, and hastily send out a group text to the other members of the Valkyrie, the sound of each keystroke echoing in the tense silence. The scent of anxiety hangs heavy in the air, mingling with the acrid odor of fear that permeates the atmosphere. Theweight of the situation presses down upon me, squeezing my chest and making it difficult to breathe.

A series of pings start going off from my phone right as the door is busted open, and in tumbles, two monstrous figures in all black donning skull masks blood coats the white of one mask making me nauseous as I shakily bring the gun up, and pull the trigger. A loud hmph, and the bigger one of the two falling into the broken door frame “FUCKING CUNT SHOT ME GRAB HER TREY!” Trey looks at me with wild eyes peeking through the slits of the mask as Draco stands between us teeth barred Sirius looks at me and then the door waiting for my command “ Go to Carla now.” with a huff he is sprinting out of the door passed non-trey leaving me and his brother behind to find my twin, “Well seems you chose the wrong house to break into. Now I will give you one chance to scrape that piece of shit out of my door and whoever else you brought and live to see the rest of the day, but if you stay here. You will not be leaving here alive.“ I keep my voice steeled and the gun pointing at the one I now know goes by Trey, Draco growls as Trey shifts his weight and begins to push further into my room a blade gripped in his hand glinting in the mid-morning light. “ You don't scare me, little girl, this is not my first rodeo. We were paid to deliver you and your sister to the boss, He never said we couldn't roughen you up while doing that.” His voice sounds like nails on the chalkboard making me grit my teeth as I take a cautious step backward keepingmy gun aimed at the man stalking his way toward me. Draco springs into action before Trey takes another step, swiftly clamping his teeth around Trey’s hand that isn’t wielding the knife. Time seems to slow down as Trey emits a cry of pain. Draco vigorously shakes his head, the sound of bones crunching reverberating around us. While trying to aim the gun at Trey, his frantic movements make it hard to shoot without putting Draco in danger. Sucking in a shaky breath, I pray to whatever deity will listen to my pleas as I squeeze the trigger the smell of smoke and gunfire fill my senses as I watch in slow motion as Trey stabs the blade into the side of Draco, as Trey’s side gushes from the gunshot that landed, he drops the limp dog onto the ground with a resounding thump that shatters my soul as Draco lays on the floor twitching in pain, tears well in my eyes as I take in the sight before me. The momentary distraction allows the opening Trey needs to get his bloody hands on me, I let out a shrill scream escape my lips right before a chloroform-soaked rag is brought to my nose and everything fades into darkness. The echo of his voice follows me into the darkness like a haunting promise for what was to come.I only hope Carla makes it out with the others.

Chapter thirty-eight

Miles

The alarm sounded throughout the house and quickly drew my attention. Time seems to stand still as I desperately try to gather my scattered thoughts, my mind foggy and weary from a restless night that offered no relief from the different scenes involving Soren and the guys playing through my mind, not allowing me for a moment's peace.

Frustration bubbled within me, certain that Soren had forgotten something yet again, and she was probably the one to trip the alarm when she arrived home. As I awaited her I desperately searched for excuses to justify our delayed response. I roll over, grab my phone from the nightstand, andunplug it from the charger to silence the alarms and check the cameras. My finger slowly swept over the bright screen right before a piercing scream had me nearly tripping over myself to get out of bed and to my gun.

Finn stumbles from the connected bathroom wet hair sticking to his face and in a state of being half-dressed “ What the fuck was that? How long has the alarm been going off?” he looks around like the answers to his question will just magically appear before him. The sound of a loud crash is heard, and then a gunshot goes off, causing my heart to race. I swiftly open the door, fully alert. The acrid scent of gunpowder sears my nostrils, its sharp bitterness intertwining with the metallic taste of dread in my mouth.

As I step into the hallway, the scene unfolds before me. With a frustrated expression, Finn mutters and curses softly as he hurriedly pulls up his shorts, which barely hide his bare ass. His knuckles, gripping the gun handle tightly, turn pale, showing how strong his hold is. The hallway is in disarray, Carla’s door hangs precariously on a single hinge, obstructing the passage to the other side. The distinct growling of Sirius reaches my ears, adding a layer of tension to the already chaotic atmosphere.

Amidst the chaos, an unknown man’s voice cuts through the air, his words hanging with an eerie uncertainty. “Shoot the dog, grab the other sister,” the chilling command echoed, making my skin crawl as I rushed forward blindly.

Finn is right behind me, following closely. Our guns are at the ready as I kick the door down, surprising the man on the other side just enough to fire a shot directly into the bastard brave enough to invade my home and harm my family.

The man grunts in pain as the bullet strikes his knee, causing him to double over. His partner glances at us before turning to Carla, raising a knife to her neck and drawing blood that trickles down, leaving a trail. Carla sobs softly, her small body trembling in the man’s grip. “One more move and I will cut my fucking losses and slice her open! We have one sister. That will be enough for them,” he hisses through his dirty, chipped teeth, his thick Southern accent making his words harsh.

His partner rolls on the carpet, clutching his shattered kneecap and cursing us and this job he never wanted. “If you make one more mark on her, I will shove the blade so far down your throat—”

“Let her go!” Finn snaps, aiming his gun at the man holding Carla. Finn’s Irish accent and menacing glare would make any man shrink in fear but this man doesn't even seem to care.

As Finn kept the man focused on him, I asked the other pressing question: “What do you mean you have one sister already? Where is she?” Fear tightens its grip on my heart as bile rises in my throat, anxious about Lena’s safety and whereabouts.

The burly, bald man before me barks out a laugh, loosening his hold on Carla and lowering his guard to answer me,momentarily forgetting the immediate threat to his life and that of his partner.

Carla seizes the moment to throw her head back, slamming it into the man's nose. A distinct crack of breaking bones echoes around us as the man stumbles backward, blood dripping from his face and lips onto the ground.

Sirius stands between Carla and the man growling as Carla slowly backs up until she is back to my chest, she trembles against me as I wrap my arms around her pulling her into me. “Shh, it’s okay. I’ve got you.” I say reassuringly, Finn steps up and extends his hand out wiping away a stray tear from her cheek. “It’ll be okay little one.” He pats her head softly before he turns his attention back to the men behind us.

Broke Nose points his gun at Carla with a sinister bloody smile plastered across his bloody face, his eyes already turning an ugly shade of black, before I have a chance to react, Finn is jumping in front of catching the bullet aimed for us.

Everything slows as I watch Finley fall to the ground clutching his chest. “NO!!”

I push Carla behind me as I scramble forward to my fallen brother.

Before I can reach him, something slams into my head and I’m crumpling forward. A blood-curdling scream follows me into the abyss and the unknown claims me.

I failed them.

I failed her.
