The man is an insufferable asshole. I don’t understand how any agents would get involved with him. Moreover, how could any woman think it’s a good idea to fall in love with Blythe Wheeler?
“Millie, are you listening to me?” my brother, Lathan, asks from his throne, otherwise known as his CEO desk at Allaire Corporations, which I, unfortunately, have been roped into because of some family motto made up by our parents.
But I call bullshit on that.
“Yes, I’m listening.”
“Good,” he says, resting his designer leather shoes on his glass desk. “I can think of no one better qualified for this job than you. You are one of the toughest agents I know, and we could benefit from your expertise.”
I lean forward, pressing my freshly manicured nails into my thighs. “And you think my expertise would be beneficial for Blythe? The same football player who has gone through at least seven agents in the past two years. That Blythe?”
Lathan smirks, taking his feet off the desk, and placing them on the stained concrete floor. “Yes. You’re our only hope.”
I roll my eyes at him, standing, and straightening my blouse. “Fine, but if he becomes a bigger issue, I’m walking away.”
“Do whatever you need to, sis.” Lathan checks his watch. “He’ll be meeting you downstairs shortly to review the revised contract from the organization. Make sure he reads all of it.”
I’d already reviewed the contract and knew precisely which sections he tailored explicitly for Blythe.
I nod as I walk out the door and past his receptionist, Tara. She has been with the Allaire Corporation since the beginning and has always been a cheerful and kind presence. Except for those who don’t follow the rules, then she blacklists you.
The elevator is slow, but finally, I stop on the third floor and walk to the room where I plan to meet Blythe. Only, when I walk in, he’s nowhere to be found.
“Great,” I say to no one in particular.
I sit in the office chair and grab a silver pen, tapping it gently on the manilla folder. Minutes pass, and Blythe is still missing.
“I knew this was a waste of time,” I grumble, pushing away from the desk just as the door flings open and in steps motherfucking Blythe Wheeler.
“What’s this about a waste of time? Because we both know I’m worth every minute.”
I groan as he removes his sunglasses and closes the space between us.
Blythe is the cornerback for the Crescent City Kings and an unfortunate memory I wish to erase.
“Oh, c’mon. At least pretend to be happy to see me.”
I give him a once over, knowing the man always looks good, but that’s part of his charm, like a vampire. He gets you close, sinks his teeth into you, and before you know it, you’re already dead.
“Being on time is a necessity, Blythe. Maybe you should invest in a watch or a babysitter.”
He smirks, plopping into the chair I just vacated. “Well, isn’t that what you’re supposed to do, princess?”
I slam my hand against the folder and lean into his space. “Let’s get one thing straight. I am not a princess and will not be considered an equal because we aren’t. I’m far superior to you.” I snatch the folder off the desk. “This contract is your last hope of playing football, and I’m the only way you get it. So, if I were you, I’d clean up this fucking playboy act and get serious, or everything about your football career will cease to exist. Got it?”
His eyes flare, and he tilts his head. “Fine. What you got for me, boss?”
