Mia sits back down as Damon straightens. He watches her warily, but she doesn’t say anything to him. She does turn to me.
“When I told Tanner about Chase cheating on you last weekend, he told me what Chase told him about Olivia. I didn’t want to say anything since you seemed to want to get back with the fucker.” Mia shrugs. “I’m also not great at having female friends. And I didn’t want to ruin our friendship.”
I open my mouth, but I don’t know what to say.
She sighs and looks up at Damon. “Nice move, by the way. Very possessivegrrrenergy. I approve.”
“Mia…” What do I say?
“Evan, I thought I was hot shit at my last school.” She blows out a breath. “My brother pulled a dickhead move with one of the top dog’s sister. I didn’t know the whole story until later. But he fucked up and deserved the shit they rained down on him. I thought he was just dating her because she was a freshman.”
Her eyes glaze over as she stares at the football field.
“I didn’t know how far he had taken it, or I would have beat his ass myself.” She shakes her head and looks at me. “He’s my brother. So I have to stand by him. I know none of this sounds good or like someone you’d want to be friends with. I also understand why you held things back from me.”
She glances at Damon, Hawk, and Cam before returning her gaze to me.
“Honestly, I think they really like you. Trust me, I tested them to see if they could be led astray. I didn’t even have to flirt five minutes with Chase to know he’d be all up on me if I let him.” She shakes her head. “But I want you to know, I wouldn’t take it there.”
“I’ve never really had a friend since elementary school.” I shrug. “I’m not sure how this whole thing works, but if you want to still be friends, I’m okay with it.”
Damon lightly tugs my hair and I tip my face toward him. His eyes narrow slightly, and I can tell he’s still not a Mia fan. I get it. Is she telling me all this to cover up any wrongdoings? Or is she being honest?
Only time will tell.
Chapter 25
Damon
Chase glances at us multiple times during the game. He didn’t see me wrap around Evan since Olivia and her bitch brigade were standing between us and him. But I know Olivia wasn’t the only one to see that time. She can keep thinking this is a game until I prove to her it isn’t.
I don’t care what she thinks as long as she leaves Evan alone.
Our team loses tonight. The football team isn’t that great. Everyone files out of the stadium, and I keep a hand on Evan. It’s too easy to get separated in a crowd like this. Cam ordered something that will help us track Evan, but it’s not here yet.
I lean down to say in Evan’s ear, “Ride with me to the party.”
She glances up at me, and her eyes are filled with longing. “I shouldn’t.”
“Why not?”
“You’re pushing it, Damon.” She slows down so our bodies are a breath away from each other.
“I like pushing it, little devil.” I wrap my hand around her hip.
She pulls away and smiles up at me.Later, she mouths before she hurries to catch up with Mia. When she grabs Mia’s arm, she glances back at me.
Hawk steps up beside me and puts his hand on my shoulder. Cam is on my other side.
“We can follow them.” He jerks his head toward our bikes.
I know I need to chill, but it feels like she’s slipping through my fingers. That Jackson already has his sights on her and it’s only a matter of time before I lose her too.
“Come on.” Cam leads the way to the motorcycles.
We can maneuver better than Mia’s car, and we’re able to stay right behind them the whole way to Becca Anderson’s house. She’s Anteros, but she’s having a party and she’s rich, so it’s going to be the place to be seen.
We pull up when Mia parks. She turns to look at us with a predatory smile. I’m not sure I believe any of the bullshit she fed Evan at the game. Maybe she really is trying to be a good friend and testing. But I know when a girl wants me, and Mia wants me. She may only want to fuck me, but she’s willing to wait for her chance.
