My first week back to work was tiring. I had to ensure I didn’t act too tired, or Bones would suggest I not work so much.

I loved what I did. The money would go into my nest egg.

I wanted to have as much as possible for the babies.

Despite what Bones said about him providing whatever they or I needed, I wasn’t putting all the burden on him.

I was capable of working. And as long as I was, I’d do it.

It was Friday, and I ended my work week by leaving early—but for a good reason.

I had my appointment with Dr. Charming, and Bones and I were super excited about it.

I could’ve found out as early as about ten weeks with a genetic test, but I hadn’t.

At the beginning of the week, Bones dropped off a vial of my blood for testing.

We’d discover the results at the appointment.

I almost jumped out of the car when we arrived at the doctor’s office. Bones was chuckling.

“Damn, Blythe, hang on. I’m coming,” he teased as he got out.

I waited for him to put on his cut, which he did while walking.

I tugged on his hand after I was out and in my cut to get him moving faster.

It made him chuckle again. The waiting room was rather full inside.

The building housed numerous doctors’ practices, including Dr. Charming’s on the first floor.

When we entered, I felt eyes studying us.

I went to the desk to sign in. I leaned over to whisper to him. He lowered his head.

“I might not get out of here alive. All these pregnant, highly horny women are mentally undressing you and want to jump you,” I told him. I was only half-joking.

He whispered, “If they try, I know how to fight. I’ll defend my virtue.” His silliness made me laugh.

After check-in, we took a seat. People were being called back, and I wondered how long we’d have to wait.

As it happened, it wasn’t long. Maybe five minutes or more after we sat down, my name was called.

Bones kept his arm around me as we followed the nurse into the back.

I went through the usual routine of giving a urine sample, having my weight taken, and then taking vitals.

Finally, I was in the room waiting, pacing.

“Baby, you have to calm down. Are you worried about the babies, or is this all excitement?” Bones asked.

“I don’t know. I’m excited to know, but I always wonder if there’ll be bad news.”

“You’ve been doing great since the beating. I made sure your infection was gone. You’re eating well and taking your vitamins and folic acid. You drink plenty of water, and your weight is spot-on. We’ve been walking several nights together,” he reminded me.

I was decompressing when I heard a knock on the door. Then, it swung open to reveal a smiling Dr. Charming. She had the perfect last name and was rarely unhappy. The only time I saw her not smile was when Deon beat me.

“Hello, you two. It’s good to see you both again. I hear that congratulations are in order, Blythe. I ran into Bones at the hospital this past weekend, and he informed me the two of you are together.”

“We are, and thank you,” I replied.

“So, tell me, what have you been doing? Any issues, not that I would see this one not addressing them already,” she said, pointing to Bones.

After I told her what I had been doing and that I had returned to work, she got me to sit on the table and let her listen to the babies. Bones likes to do this at home, and she also lets us hear. When she was done, she grinned.

“You’ve been very good. I know you’re dying to find out the sex of the babies. I have the results. I saved them because I like to end on a high. Plus, I like torturing my patients,” she confessed.

“God, yes, tell us,” I pleaded.

“Here, how about you two read this?” She handed over a piece of paper. I read it, then looked up at Bones to see his reaction. He was scowling, and my stomach dropped.

“What’s wrong?” I whispered.

“Do you know what you’ve done to me? I’ll never get a lick of sleep.

I’ll have to buy an arsenal and lock them in a tower by the time they’re five.

They’ll end up looking like you, and every boy, then men in a five-state radius, will come sniffing around.

Why did you do this to me? Two girls,” he bemoaned, then grinned a second before grabbing me and tipping me over his arm to kiss me.

I vaguely heard Dr. Charming clapping and congratulating us, but I was too consumed by Bones to care. By the time he let me go, I was dazed. I had to gather my thoughts.

“Thank you, Dr. Charming. I wasn’t expecting it to be two girls, to be honest. Maybe one of each,” I admitted once I could think again.

“I can’t wait to see this nut with two little girls. They’ll have him wrapped around their pinkies in no time,” she teased.

“What do you mean, in no time? They already do. Is there more? If not, I’ve got to get her home, tell the club, and start building our defenses,” he mutters as if talking to himself.

The three of us had a great time laughing.

When it was over, my next appointment was booked, and we were free to go.

Bones insisted we go out to dinner to celebrate, and then go home and share the happy news with the club.

I was feeling hungry, so I agreed. I told him to choose the place.

As long as it had good food, I’d be happy.

He ended up choosing Rossi’s, a great Italian restaurant.

I could already taste the bread and the yummy sauce they made.

I didn’t know what they put in it, but it was incredible.

We were seated relatively quickly since it was still a bit early for the dinner rush.

I studied the menu, trying to decide what to get.

There were too many items to make it easy.

I was particularly fond of pasta with red sauces.

Bones and I debated on several before we finally narrowed it down.

Our drinks and warm homemade bread were brought to us, and we placed our orders.

I had to work hard not to fill up on their incredible bread. I moaned as I took another bite. Bones smiled and then whispered to me. “If you keep making those sounds, everyone here will get an education they weren’t expecting.” He sounded only half teasing. I saw there was heat in his gaze.

“Would you want that or to wait until we get home and be able to let loose? Anticipation makes it better. You taught me that,” was my response.

Just those few words of his had ignited my desire.

It was insane how many times a day I thought of sex.

I was worse than what they say a man was. I wiggled my butt on the chair.

“Are you trying to get comfortable, Firefly?” He smirked.

“You know exactly what I’m doing, you evil man. Stop. We need nourishment for what’s to come later. Besides, I don’t believe anyone here wants to see a naked pregnant woman.”

“I bet most wouldn’t give a damn. I know you think I’m crazy when I say I find you incredibly sexy while pregnant, but it’s true,” he stated.

“As long as you think so, I’m more than satisfied,” I assured him with a smile.

To distract ourselves, we discussed what we had done at work.

He’d been busy at the laundromat on payroll.

Earlier in the week, he’d helped at the hospital.

I didn’t want to upset him, but I had to ask.

I’d been thinking about it since he told me about his past. And after his shift this week, it had been more on my mind.

“Bones, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you. It’s about your work at the hospital,” I said tentatively.

“Sure, what do you want to know?”

“I see how much you enjoy the times you work at the ER. Even if it was a hectic day, you still loved it. I can tell by the way you talk about your day. I know you cover the laundromat for the club, but anyone could do that. Do you think you’d ever want to work at the hospital full-time?

Or to have a private practice? After everything that happened with your family, I understand why you said you didn’t.

But I feel you’re missing out. You love being a doctor.

There are so many who would benefit if you were to practice full-time.

I’m not pushing you to do anything you don’t want to do.

I was just wondering if you might change your mind.

I couldn’t imagine not doing what I love as much as possible. ”

He sat there, mulling over what I said. He didn’t appear upset, just contemplative.

I waited for him to gather his thoughts.

As long as he was happy, I would be. And it had nothing to do with me wanting him to make more money.

I made a decent wage, and when I appraised and got new pieces for the store, and they sold, I got a commission, and there were other times I got them, too. Alfred was generous.

“I was adamant that when I joined the club, I would be seen as a biker, not a doctor. That side of me would be secondary.”

“And I’m good with it if you are,” I hastily added.

“I know you are. However, I can’t deny what you said.

It fills me with joy, and I feel good when I can help others.

The laundromat is safe and boring, and it isn’t something that requires any real skill to do.

It leaves plenty of time to do other things.

Before us, I would’ve said no. I wouldn’t do either.

But now, after meeting you, we’re having a family, and I think about helping you when you first came to us.

I have to admit. I’m not as opposed to the idea.

I’m unsure whether I’d like to practice more in the ER, have an office, or do a combination of both.

I know I wouldn’t want it to take up all my time.

I want to spend plenty of it with you and the kids. ”
