“You all know I’m a man of few words, so I thought I’d sing a little something instead,” I said, picking up my guitar and pulling the strap over my shoulder. I slid my precious guitar pick out of my pocket, and winked at Natalie.
Her eyes glistened with excitement, and the guests cheered in delight.
“Blue, almost ten years ago I made you a promise. I wrote a piece of music, and I promised you would be the first to hear it. You may all recognise the tune, but these are the original lyrics. This is for my wife.”
Natalie’s eyes grew wide when I began to play the intro to ‘In Time’. I immersed myself into the song and couldn’t meet her eyes until it was finished. Playing the final note, I finally let myself look her way. Happy tears ran down her face and she jumped onto the stage. She threw herself into my embrace and I held her tightly. The guests were applauding, but I could barely hear them over my heart.
“Luke, that was so beautiful. We should have used that version all along,” she gushed in wonderment.
“Nope, the world can have the other one. This version is just for you,” I said and pulled her closer. “And our baby bluebird,” I whispered.
Our lips touched and we forgot about the rest of the world. We were consumed by happiness and the promise of our exciting future together. I couldn’t wait to carry her over the threshold and make love to her in our bed, and prove to her every day that she was exactly where she was supposed to be. Home.
